The Rockford IceHogs were the first to get on the board 5:45 into the first period. Graham Knott went toe-to-toe with Matiss Kivlenieks. He stuck with it long enough to push the puck through Kivlenieks’ five-hole.
With 1:15 left in the first period, the Monsters tied the game at one. Terry Broadhurst broke away with the puck and sped towards the net. He looked to his right and saw Zac Dalpe coming in hot. T.Broadhurst passed the puck to Dalpe who slammed it home for the goal.
A little over nine minutes into the second period, Dalpe extended the lead for the Monsters with a power play goal. The power play started out as another pass, pass, pass situation. Fans were beginning to get restless with this style of play and began yelling “SHOOT IT”. They finally got their wish 30 seconds into the power play. Carter Camper saw Dalpe open at the near faceoff dot and fired the puck his way. Dalpe one-timed the pass into the back of the net.
Three and a half minutes later, the Monsters would extend their lead over the IceHogs to 3-1. After a few quick-thinking passes by Calvin Thurkauf and Ryan Collins, Brady Austin was able to launch a shot from the blue line past Collin Delia’s glove.
With under two minutes to play in the second period, Anthony Louis put the IceHogs within one of the Monsters. He banged a shot off of the right post and into the net.
Luke Johnson scored the equalizer for the IceHogs with a little over 11 minutes to play in the game. He caught Matiss Kivlenieks looking in the opposite direction and popped the puck into the net to tie the game at three.
No one was able to score after Johnson’s third-period goal. The game headed to a scoreless overtime and then onto a shootout.

Paul Bittner – Bittner raced towards the net and fired off a shot which went just a bit wide. – NO GOAL
Anthony Louis – Louis went top-shelf on Kivlenieks – GOAL

Alex Broadhurst – A.Broadhurst went toe-to-toe with Delia before getting stuffed – NO GOAL
Viktor Svedberg – Svedberg tried to fire one to the right of Kivlenieks’ pads. However, Kivlenieks was able to get there in time to stop the puck from going into the net. – NO GOAL

Terry Broadhurst – T. Broadhurst went backhand to forehand a few times before backhanding his shot off the crossbar – GOAL
Matheson Iacopelli – Kivlenieks stuffed Iacopelli without any hesitation – NO GOAL

Quick Thoughts
- The Monsters had a tough time getting pucks to the net during the first five minutes of the game. The next five minutes of the game was a lot better. The Monsters were putting more pucks on net and set up a multitude of great plays.
- The style of play coming out of the Monsters’ top line of A. Broadhurst, Dalpe, and T. Broadhurst is out of this world. They listen well to each other and can preemptively guess each other moves. /
“If you look at our line we are involved. For lack of a better word buzzing around in the o-zone. I think we are reading off of each other really well. With that comes a couple goals and it’s nice to get rewarded.” – Zac Dalpe
- Not a single penalty was taken by the Monsters tonight. They played a fairly disciplined game and kept control of their sticks. Normally they take a few slashing or tripping penalties.
- Ryan Collins is low-key aggressive. You don’t see it coming and the ref is usually looking the other direction.
- The Monsters must love having Brady Austin back in action. He was on fire tonight. From Austin’s goal in the second period to the way he battled for the puck, there was a lot to like out of him tonight. /

- It’s been fun to watch Matiss Kivlenieks grow before our eyes the past few weeks. He’s become a more confident and skillful goalie./

- A win in the home barn after a long road trip is huge for the Monsters. This could be the beginning of something beautiful. /

Austin wears number 3. His goal in the second period was his 3rd goal of the season. It was the Monsters’ 3rd goal of the night in their 3rd win of 2018.
What’s Next
The Monsters and IceHogs meet again on Friday, January 19th at 7pm. The boys will be wearing their gold sweaters in honor of Cavaliers Tribute night.
