Quick Thoughts: Sharks 5, Blue Jackets 3

First Period

– Through the first 10 minutes, the Jackets killed a penalty and Dalton Prout won a 10-round fight against Michael Haley. Seconds later, Mike Brown threw down Gregory Campbell in another scrap.

– Just seven seconds after that, Tommy Wingels gave Columbus a power play for interference. Jackets jammed Alex Stalock and created a scuffle in front of the net. Was gonna be that kind of game. CBJ created some great chances, especially one for Atkinson in the low slot. No goal for either team.

– San Jose found the board with 3:33 left in the first period. A San Jose shot and rebound fell to Patrick Marleau in front, whose shot close in rose past Bobrovsky for a 1-0 Sharks lead. Bob’s 63-save streak came to an end on that goal.

Second Period

– Not much to note until Johansen ties the game with 5:35 into the period. Stalock made some saves to create rebounds and Joey banged one home on the rebound for his unassisted fourth goal of the season for a 1-1 game.

– BOONE! Brandon Saad found William Karlsson on a beautiful pass in front, who in turn made a sublime feed to Boone Jenner in front to finish the tic-tac-toe goal 6:48 into the period. Jenner had a wide open net by way of some incredible even-strength passing from some young CBJ:

Jack Johnson hit the post—on another open net—as the Jackets buzzed deep in the San Jose zone following the zone. Incredible hockey from Columbus right now.

– Three penalties in a row as Tommy Wingels committed a penalty, Rene Bourque high-sticked Joe Pavelski a minute later and Brent Burns went to the both for interference about a minute later as well…then Justin Braun went for holding 35 seconds later. All this resulted in a 4-on-3 for the CBJ and a longer two-man advantage after that. Couple of Columbus shots and some pressure but no goals for anybody, even on the ensuing 5-on-4. Not ideal, not horrible. Chance to add to the lead, though the power play did some work.

– Bob made a few saves to hold San Jose scoreless. Dalton Prout headed to the box for cross checking with 5:29 to go in the period. Columbus makes easy work of it.

– Columbus scored two unanswered goals in the second and outshot the Sharks 19-7 in the period. Excellent frame.

Third Period

– Jackets struck soon 1:23 into the period when Cam slammed home a puck that Nick Foligno threw in front and glanced off a Shark stick. San Jose challenged, alleging Scott Hartnell occupied space Stalock needed to make the save. No dice, though, and the goal stood for a 3-1 CBJ lead:

– San Jose cut the lead to one when Joe Pavelski’s snow-white stick tipped in a Justin Braun shot low and past Sergei Bobrovsky 6:13 into the period. 3-2 lead for Columbus now.

– Dalton Prout hooked a Shark with 8:42 to go and Brent Bruns tied the game seven seconds later. Unreal pass from the top of the dot to the other to Burns for a one-timer past Bob. Not much to do there. Tie game with 8:35 left.

– There it is. Less than two minutes later, Brenden Dillon’s snap shot beats Bob for a San Jose goal with 6:45 to go. Three unanswered San Jose goals this period for a 4-3 lead. San Jose entered the game tied for the fewest third-period goals in the NHL.

– Columbus tries to create anything in vain. Bob exited the net with 1:20 to go, Joe Pavelski stole the puck in the CBJ zone from Boone Jenner and fired it into the empty net at the 1:16 mark. Scott Hartnell then picked up a 10-minute misconduct right after. So Rychel to the box for two. Total and complete meltdown. That’s game.

Quick Thoughts

– Four straight goals for San Jose in the third period. Utter meltdown. No other way to put it.

– Honestly, whatever good play that happened before this, the 3-1 lead, the strong play for the young guys…wiped out.

– Forget this. Next up: at New Jersey on Wednesday. Just because I made this GIF, this wasn’t a penalty:
