NHL Power Rankings – Columbus Opening Eyes

The Power Rankings are now out. Keep in mind they were posted within the last few days so they might not reflect the current records of the league.

Since our last Power Rankings post here at the Cannon, the CBJ enjoyed a win over Nashville, won an unnecessary thriller on Long Island and dropped a home and home against Detroit. Despite losing back to back games for the first time all year, a lot of folks are pretty high on the Blue Jackets right now.

Where will the team go from here? Does the PP improve? Does Filatov start scoring? Nashville is coming to town looking for revenge, and games in Buffalo and home against those pesky Penguins finish out the week!

GO JACKETS!!!

ESPN – 10th out of 30 (Last week: 9th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Swept in a home-and-home weekend set against the masters from Hockeytown, the Jackets are brought down to Earth a little.”

TSN – 11th out of 30 (Last week: 7th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Back-to-back losses to the Red Wings show that there’s still room for improvement, but it’s heartening to see the improved play of G Steve Mason (2.43 GAA, .931 SV% in November).”

CBS Sports – 9th out of 30 (Last week: 8th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Better results at home would help. So would Nikita Filatov finding a way to get his first goal of the season. “

Yahoo! Sports – 10th out of 30 (Last week: 19th; updated: 11/30/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Thumbs up: So where exactly did all this come from? It starts and ends with goaltending for this team, and they’re getting it so far from a nice pair – Steve Mason and Mathieu Garon – who work well together.”

Fox Sports – 6th out of 30 (Last week: 6th; updated: 11/30/10; record: 14-8-0)

“The Blue Jackets started off Week 8 by winning their first two games on the slate, extending their winning streak to a season-high five games. But an unproductive power play helped put an end to that streak, as Columbus closed out the week with two straight losses where the team only connected once on 12 extra-man chances.”

The Dispatch – 8th out of 30 (Last week: 8th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Made it one step from the top of the heap before the Red Wings sent them backward with a dismissive slap.”

The Hockey News – 6th out of 30 (Last week: 6th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Jackets still impressing – at least before running into Red Wings buzzsaw on the weekend”

The Bleacher Report – 10th out of 30 (Last week: 11th; updated: 11/29/10; record: 14-8-0)

“Led by a strong defensive effort, the Blue Jackets have become relevant in the Central Division. Unfortunately for the Jackets, their five-game win streak ended with a home-and-home sweep by the Red Wings. On the bright side, goaltender Steve Mason is looking like himself again.”

SBN – 2nd out of 15 (Last week: 4th; updated: 11/30/10; record: 14-8-0)

A couple good tough wins followed up with a couple of good performances, but they weren’t enough. What say you, fans, are the latest rankings fair, unfair, or…
