Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s NHL Skills Competition:

EVENTS

1 – Fastest Skater

This one is self-explanatory. Each team has four skaters, with four rounds of head-to-head racing. The winning team in each of the four races gets a point, while the team with the skater making the fastest overall time gets an extra point.

2 – Breakaway Challenge

This is one of my favorite events, as it’s the one where creativity and goofiness is promoted. Remember Ovechkin with his props? Kane with his superhero cape? Each team will have three shooters and one goalie. Each shooter gets three shots, with the teams alternating after each shot.

Leading up to the weekend a guaranteed spot in this event was voted on by the fans using Twitter. The three players eligible for the vote were Johnny Gaudreau, Claude Giroux and Ryan Johansen, with Johansen emerging as the winner.

Once all shooters have taken their three attempts, a fan vote, again using Twitter, will determine the winner. The player voted as most entertaining earns his team one point.

3 – Accuracy Shooting

Each team will use four skaters and two passers, with the goal of smashing foam targets mounted in each corner of the net. The teams will alternate, with the winner of each of the four head-to-head matchups earning his team a point, while the player who hits all four targets the fastest will earn his team a bonus point.

Team Toews participants: Jonathan Toews, Rick Nash, Ryan Getzlaf, John Tavares, Patrice Bergeron, Patrik Elias

4 – Skills Challenge Relay

This is a timed event consisting of five challenges: one timers, passing, puck control, stick handling and goalie goals. The players have to complete each challenge before moving on to the next one. For one timers, there are three shooters and one passer per team, and each shooter must score two goals. The passing challenge is one skater completing a pass into four nets; the puck control challenge is one skater per team navigating a series of cones; the stick handling is one skater per team controlling the puck through a series of other pucks; and finally the goalie goals challenge is exactly as it sounds- one goalie from each team needs to score two goals.

The objective is to be the team that finishes all five challenges before the other. The winner of each of the two heats gets a point, the team with the fastest overall heat gets a bonus point.

The participants for this event will be decided later- 14 skaters and two goalies from each squad are taking part.

5 – Hardest Shot

The marquee event of the skills competition, the hardest shot challenge is simple: be the guy who blasts the puck the hardest. Four skaters from each team will go head-to-head, with each player attempting two shots. The four head-to-head winners will earn their team a point, while the player with the fastest shot overall gets a bonus point. With no Zdeno Chara in the event, this is Shea Weber’s to lose.

6 – NHL Shootout

The final challenge sees participation from all players, in a three-round shootout. Rounds are two minutes long, with seven skaters and one goalie taking part. Each player is given ten seconds to take a shot. Teams alternate after each shot until the two minutes runs out. Every third puck will be a sponsored puck, and if a goal is scored with one it’s worth two points. All other goals are worth a point.

The players have to use NHL shootout rules in this event.

At the end of all events, the team with the most points will of course, be the winner.
