In a move to keep solidifying the core of what he believes will be a playoff contending team, Scott Howson has inked Jackets’ defenseman Fedor Tyutin to a new 6 year extension which the Dispatch is reporting will be worth $27 million.
The deal makes him the team’s fourth highest paid player behind Rick Nash, Jeff Carter, and James Wisniewski, reinforcing the intent that Tyutin will be the team’s #1 pairing d-man. Growing into the role since being acquired in the Nikolai Zherdev deal, this will take Tyutin through what is generally considered prime years for an NHL D-man and, should he increase his scoring production back to the 30+ point level (or higher!) alongside James Wisniewski, he’ll be making a very reasonable salary compared to d-men like Brent Burns, John-Michael Liles, or Dennis Wideman.
The move is also reported to include a full no trade for the first three years, and a modified NTC for the remaining three. With Wiz, Tyutin, and Methot locked into longer term deals, that brings up an interesting question for the future of prospects like John Moore and David Savard. With Clitsome and Russell not reaching potential free agency until 2013, the only likely roster spots to open up are the hotly contested #7 position, or depend on the fate of Radek Martinek after this season…
