Jackets Draft Defenseman Gianluca Curcuruto 182nd Overall

With their final pick in the 2012 Draft, the Jackets went with defenseman Gianluca Curcuruto from the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL. He’s a steady, two-way defenseman.

I haven’t had the opportunity to see him play, so I’ll let the people that have take the wheel from here on:

Here is a great look at Curcuruto from Hockey’s Future. They paint a picture of a young player who tried to do too much and overextended himself. He simplified his game, with positive results.

The Prospects Blog did a profile on Curcuruto, check it out here. They say some of the same things that HF did, regarding him trying to do too much. What they also go on to say is that he was a player who was originally pegged to go higher in the draft given his skill, and that he may turn out to be a solid NHL defenseman with some polishing along the way.

It will be interesting to track Curcuruto’s progress over the next couple of years, he could turn out to be a late-round gem, given his raw talent. If he can put it all together mentally and physically as TPB suggests, the Jackets could have themselves a bit of a steal, I dare say.
