Jackets Announce Team Awards

While the NHL takes a quick break from last night’s playoff excitement, the Jackets took a moment to steal a brief spotlight by releasing their team awards for the 2010-2011 season.

Not surprisingly, fan favorite R.J. Umberger won the team’s fan voted MVP award, and also collected the team’s John H. McConnell Most Courageous Player award as voted upon by his teammates.

So, what about the rest of the hardware?

Three Stars Award – Rick Nash took the three stars award with the most first, second, and third stars awarded in Jackets’ games.

Outstanding Defenseman – Fedor Tyutin won the team’s Outstanding Defenseman award, as voted by the local media. I’d personally have argued for Marc Methot, but it’s a decision I can live with.

Most Improved Player – A well deserved award to Derek MacKenzie, who really blossomed this season into a full time NHL player. The award was voted on by the team’s broadcasters.

Player Community Service Award – The Blue Jackets‘ Foundation and Community Development staff voted Jared Boll the community service award winner for his work with pediatric cancer patients, active military personnel, and Children’s Hospital. Well deserved.

Congratulations to each player, and may we be celebrating a lot more than just team awards at this time of the year next season.
