Highlight Recap, Game Two: Blue Jackets at Capitals

After stealing home ice advantage with their game one victory, the Columbus Blue Jackets looked to take a 2-0 series lead as the team returns home.

Here’s what happened.

First Period

Jay Beagle got the Capitals on the board early in this one. After a faceoff win, Brooks Orpik let a shot go rom the slot that Beagle deflected past Sergei Bobrovsky, who had no chance.

Alex Ovechkin doubled the Caps lead on a power play with 13:26 gone. He scored from the left faceoff circle, which is no surprise.

Cam Atkinson cut the deficit to one on a breakaway goal that beat Grubauer with literally inches for the puck to go in. It was Cam’s fourth postseason goal, assisted by Foligno. Foligno’s pass was crazy good from deep in his own zone to spring a streaking Atkinson.

After 20 minutes, the Jackets trailed 2-1 but getting one back felt huge in the moment.

Second Period

The Jackets took a penalty and Alex Ovechkin scored their second man advantage goal of the night early in the penalty, converting into a gaping net as Backstrom found an unmarked Ovechkin to restore the two goal lead. The penalty kill did the Blue Jackets no favors tonight.

Josh Anderson drew the Jackets back within one at 8:49 on a nice rush up the ice. Werenski and Jones drew the assists.

Cam Atkinson tied it on a beautiful power play goal. Unreal.

AND ZACH WERENSKI GIVES THEM THE LEAD. Werenski let a wrister fly from the blue line to beat Grubauer and the Jackets took a lead for the first time on the night. This team never says die, and it’s incredible.

Third Period

Braden Holtby made his series debut to begin the third period as Washington changed goaltenders.

The Capitals had a power play that was basically a shooting gallery in the first five minutes, but the Jackets were able to kill it thanks to solid workman like effort.

The third period happened and it was a heart attack.

TJ Oshie scored on a power play with 3:35 to go. The Jackets’ inability to stay out of the box bit them yet again.

The Jackets forced overtime killing a Jenner penalty to end the third. Somehow.
