Highlight Recap, Game #54: Jackets at Flames

No morning skate as the Jackets played in Vancouver the previous night. A bit of a mystery as to the starting goalie for the Jackets, but Torts goes with the hot hand.

Your CBJ starters – Joonas Korpisalo in net again. Jenner, Dubinsky, Atkinson up front. Murray and Jones on the blue line.

First Period Highlights

Dubinsky won the opening faceoff.

SCRUM with 18:37 left. Rychel fired a shot on the rush and Calvert went off for roughing as did Smid for the Flames.

Jack Johnson paired with Cody Goloubef again on the 2nd pairing.

Open ice with the 4-on-4 but no shots registered according to FSO.

Karri Ramo with a couple of nice saves after the penalties expire. Icing follows that sequence.

SAVE (finally) by Korpisalo 5:27 in.

BREAKWAY – Jenner denied.

Immediately the Flames responded.

Flames goal. 3-on-2 rush and Jiri Hudler buries it. 1-0 Calgary seven minutes in. Wennberg a split second late on the back check.

Long shot Prout…grabbed and held by Ramo.

PUCK LOOSE…Korpisalo covers up.

Chance on the rush by the Flames…but it goes wide.

SHOT…Hartnell fires from a sharp angle and the puck bounces to the slot but no one on either team sees it for a few moments.

CHANCE – Rychel ripped one high and wide.

SAVE…Korpisalo denied one on the rush and covered up a few seconds later in the sequence.

Foligno-Campbell-Bourque. That’s a line. They forced an icing at least.

Flames led after 20 minutes 1-0, and 11-7 on the shot count.

Tortorella really rolled every line – all forwards between 4:09 and 5:35 of ice time through the first period. Tyutin-Prout shielded a bit as the top four defensemen each played over seven minutes each.

Second Period Highlights

SAVE and SAVE again. Korpisalo was busy the first couple minutes, including an incredible back-to-back situation.

CHANCE…Wennberg on a rush fired it wide.

Calgary owned the first five minutes of the middle period. 5-2 on shots, but no scoring yet.

Calvert rocked by Bennett.

GLOVE SAVE Korpisalo.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL! Finally…after the Flames controlled territorial play for a good ten minutes, Seth Jones led a rush into the offensive zone and waited, waited…and then passed to the trailer. That was William Karlsson who fired one past Ramo to tie the game at one each.

SHOT…Seth Jones nearly fooled Ramo a few minutes later.

Torts Line Blenderâ„¢ in full force. Campbell and Bourque took a shift with Saad as well as Foligno.

Foligno-Dubinsky-Jenner and Tyutin-Jones out of a timeout. Those were actual combinations.

Jackets slowly piled up shots, while the Flames got nothing for a few minutes.

SHOT – Ramo sticked aside Wennberg’s wrister from the half-wall.

After 40 minutes, it’s tied 1-1. Shots in the 2nd period were 9-7 in favor of Calgary.

Third Period Highlights

CHANCE! – Seth Jones just missed his chance at a goal within the first minute of play.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL! Karlsson…again! 2-on1 rush. Calvert brought the puck up the right side of the ice. Matty Ice waited out Kris Russell and fed a cross-ice pass to Karlsson who then finished off the rush into the open net. 2-1 Jackets!

SAVE! Korpisalo with the calm glove save on a Bennett wrist shot.

Penalty…Goloubef called for tripping. First power play of the night for either time.

Another glove save by Korpisalo. Kid is calm and collected, as usual.

One shot on the PP for the Flames…a couple shots sent wide and a couple that were blocked as well.

Icing…Torts call timeout. They immediately iced it again after the timeout.

CHANCE…Calvert cannot convert.

It was all Flames late – the CBJ registered no shots on net over the final 16 minutes, but they held on for the win.

FINAL 2-1 CBJ

QUICK THOUGHTS

Korpisalo knows how to ruin a run at 30th. He was the #1 star with 30 saves and is now 6-1-1 over his last eight starts.

Calvert was the second star, picking up two assists. Wild Bill was the other star, scoring both Blue Jackets goals.

Seth Jones played great once again. The win moves the Jackets to 4-1-1 in their last 6 games.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jackets get the rest of the weekend off before returning to action against the Islanders Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena.
