Highlight Recap, Game #60: Jackets at Bruins

Following a shellacking at home courtesy of the Buffalo Sabres, the Columbus Blue Jackets left Nationwide Arena to take on the Boston Bruins. After a practice that apparently resulted in the team doing pushups again yesterday, the team would head to Boston looking to finally secure a win in the series finale between the two teams this season.

There were no lineup changes from Coach Tortorella heading into the game. Despite giving up 4 goals in his last outing, Joonas Korpisalo would make his 12th consecutive start for the Blue Jackets. Boone Jenner also avoided additional discipline following his game misconduct penalty against the Sabres.

To the highlights!

FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Your CBJ starters: Joonas Korpisalo, Boone Jenner, Brandon Dubinsky, Cam Atkinson, Ryan Murray, Seth Jones

Slow start to the game as neither team generated a shot on goal for the first two minutes.

Jack Johnson leveled Mark Pastrnak at 2:00.

After an offensive zone turnover, Rene Bourque sent a shot off of the post that had Jonas Gustavsson beat.

Korpisalo made the game’s first save at 3:30 on a Brad Marchand effort after Seth Jones misplayed a puck, leading to a 2 on 1.

Nick Foligno with a wraparound denied at 5:15.

Columbus controlled the run of play fairly well for the first 7 minutes, outshooting the Bruins 3-1.

Excellent movement on the penalty kill, especially by Dubinsky and Atkinson.

The Blue Jackets killed the penalty, allowing 2 shots.

Jackets on the power play! Kevan Miller went off at 9:55 for interference against Scott Hartnell.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL! Boone Jenner redirected a Cam Atkinson shot home at 10:52. His 20th, and a career high. Assists went to Cam Atkinson and Ryan Murray.

Boston responds. That’s some typical Jackets stuff. Loui Eriksson scored from the blue line as he was on top of Korpisalo. Torts challenged the play, and it was upheld. That was a pretty poor call. Thanks, War Room. Assist to Torey Krug at 11:07.

End to end action through the middle parts of the period. Both teams had chances.

CHANCE! Alexander Wennberg couldn’t get his stick on a rebound at 15:30.

SCRUM at 18:00.

Gustavsson made a save on a Fedor Tyutin shot at 18:42 as Kerby Rychel and William Karlsson crashed the net.

SETH JONES HIT THE POST AT 19:30.

The period ended with the score tied 1-1, with Columbus outshooting Boston 13-10.

SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

BLUE JACKETS GOAL. Wicked snipe from Boone Jenner at 0:21. Assists to Brandon Dubinsky and Seth Jones.

Columbus had an extra hop in their step to start the second, taking the game to the Bruins and generally looking to attack.

Boston goal. For the second time as I’m literally typing something praising the Blue Jackets play, the Bruins tie the game. Matt Beleskey tied it at 2:57. Assists to Jimmy Hayes and Joe Morrow.

Blue Jackets power play! David Krejci went off for holding at 4:41.

CHANCES GALORE. ON THE POWER PLAY. Headlined by Wennberg hitting the post. 3 posts in 25 minutes.

Boston killed the penalty, despite the CBJ having a number of chances.

Seth Jones is absolutely controlling the game on the back end. It’s insane how great he is.

Seth Jones blocked a shot off his hand at 9:00.

Dubinsky saw a shot saved 9:45.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL!! William Karlsson and his beautiful flow put the Jackets back in front at 10:17 on a one- timer after a failed clearance. The goal was unassisted.

(not writing for 3 minutes so I don’t jinx the team again)

3 minute passed and no goals! Hooray!

Boston goal. Kevan Miller threw a shot that was deflected in by Matt Beleskey at 2:52. Assists to Miller and Joe Morrow.

SCRUM. Matt Pastrnak and Jack Johnson went at it at 4:20.

FIGHT. Matt Calvert and Kevan Millar went at it at 4:49.

Brandon Saad saw a backhand saved at 6:10 as the teams went to a TV timeout.

Columbus has had to endure a push from Boston to start the third period, and it’s been a struggle. The team appeared to be pressing hard.

Korpisalo made a save through a crowd at 8:24.

At the 10:01 TV timeout, Columbus was holding on for dear life.

SAVE KORPISALO AT 12:10

Chance from Wennberg at 12:20!

KNEEL BEFORE SAAD. Brandon Saad scored, much to the dismay of Gustavsson who was REALLY unhappy after that play. Scott Hartnell had attempted a shot and knocked a loose stick at Gustavsson. It was inadvertent and shouldn’t be interference. After a Boston challenge, the goal stood. Assists to Hartnell and Alexander Wennberg at 14:29.

Brad Marchand fired the puck at Korpisalo after a whistle and went off for unsportsmanlike conduct. His further complaints earned him a game misconduct at 15:44.

The Bruins pulled Gustavsson at 16:57.

Bruins goal. Loui Eriksson scored at 17:03 and Boston got within one. Assists to David Krejci and Matt Pastrnak.

Korpisalo save at 17:30.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL. Dalton Prout (holy hell, I didn’t know THAT could happen) scored an empty netter at 17:45. Goal was unassisted.

FINAL: Columbus Blue Jackets 6 Boston Bruins 4

THREE STARS

QUICK THOUGHTS

Torts had made a point that players should be ready to shoot when the puck arrives in practice yesterday. The Blue Jackets’ opening goal was a redirect of a one-time shot.

Giving up an immediate goal after opening the scoring was frustrating. The team has to be more disciplined than that.

Per the NHL’s explanation on Boston’s first goal, “… no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line. The original call stands – good goal Bruins. ” Um……. I vehemently disagree.

4 goals and 4 posts through 2 periods. Safe to say the Blue Jackets came to shoot the puck tonight.

Unreal offensive production through two periods. I haven’t seen this team play this well in a long time.

Matt Calvert played a great game tonight.

That was an entertaining game.

UP NEXT

Another back to back. Go figure. The Blue Jackets make their only national television appearance of the season as they take on the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Faceoff is at 7:30 EST on NBC Sports Network.
