Highlight Recap, Game #55: Jackets vs. Islanders

A several day break! Who knew those were allowed? After being off since last Friday’s victory over the Calgary Flames, the Columbus Blue Jackets returned home to take on the New York Islanders. Coach Tortorella, unwilling to mess with a winning lineup, made no changes from the roster in Calgary. Jared Boll would miss the game after being hit by an errant Brandon Dubinsky pass in practice yesterday, and David Savard was still listed as day to day. To the highlights!

FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Your CBJ starters: Joonas Korpisalo, Boone Jenner, Brandon Dubinsky, Cam Atkinson, Ryan Murray, Seth Jones

Cody Goloubef dropped Mikhail Grabovski at 0:54, dislodging the net.

Islanders goal. Ryan Strome put a shot in off the faceoff at 0:56. It was a wrister off the faceoff that made its way through the crowd and beat Korpisalo. Assist to John Tavares.

Nick Foligno, the captain, started the night on the 4th line. Kind of sums up the season, no?

Islanders power play. Dalton Prout went off for holding at 4:13. That followed two turnovers from Prout on one shift. I, for one, will be angry if he is on the roster next season. He’s a complete liability on the ice.

Suffice it to say, this game could have started better.

Jack Johnson used his leg to block a John Tavares slapper on the kill.

The Blue Jackets killed the penalty.

SAVE! Korpisalo used the right pad to deny the Isles from point blank range at 7:10.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL!! CAMSANITY. Cam Atkinson buried a loose puck after a scrum at 7:45. Assist to Brandon Dubinsky.

CHANCE! Brandon Saad rifled a shot wide at 9:45 after Scott Hartnell forced a turnover. A rolling puck prevented a better chance.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL!!! Brandon Dubinsky buries a feed from Atkinson! Jenner cleared the puck to Atkinson, who fed Dubinsky and swept it home at 11:26. Assist to Cam Atkinson.

Columbus, after a shaky 5 minutes, had firmly taken control of the game. It was something to see. I haven’t seen the forecheck this strong in a long time.

Saad was denied by Halak at 14:00!!

ATKINSON DENIED AT POINT BLANK RANGE AT 15:00

SAVE! Korpisalo denies Grabovski at 15:15!

Seth Jones is good. This is a scheduled comment.

Halak saves a Goloubef shot at 18:11.

At the end of the first period, Columbus led 2-1. Columbus outshot New York 12-7.

SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Several icings to start the second period for Blue Jackets. It was a choppy restart to the game.

Korpisalo keeps the crease clear at 1:30!

Jackets on the power play! Frans Nielson went off for tripping at 3:31.

Several chances for Scott Hartnell and Alexander Wennberg, but Halak kept the net clean at 5:00.

The Islanders killed the penalty.

SCRUM. Brandon Dubinsky took exception to a push in front of the net at 6:04 following an excellent offensive zone shift.

SAVE! Korpisalo managed to keep the puck out of the net several times in rapid succession at 7:31.

As fast paced as the first period was, the second was the opposite.

The game was halted at 10:15 as the puck came to rest on top of the Islanders net, leading to a TV timeout.

BRANDON DUBINSKY BREAKWAY DENIED AT 11:00.

Columbus was moving without the puck very well tonight. It was encouraging to see.

SAVE. Korpisalo makes a save on a backhand at 13:00.

Jack Johnson went to the locker room after taking a puck off of his ankle at 15:55 and it did not look good.

Brandon Dubinsky leveled Thomas Hickey.

JJ was back out on the ice for his next shift, though he was not moving nearly as fast as he typically does.

Korpisalo was absolutely on fire tonight.

The Islanders made a push at the end of the second period, but Korpisalo kept shutting the door.

Cal Clutterbuck is annoying.

Cam Atkinson fanned on an attempt at 18:00.

The second period with Columbus maintaining their 2-1 lead despite being outshot 24-20.

THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

End to end action to open the third period.

William Karlsson forced a neutral zone turnover, and the Jackets dumped and chased. Go team.

Islanders on the power play. Boone Jenner was boxed for hooking at 2:34.

Islanders goal. Anders Lee threw a backhand past Korpisalo at 3:05 to equalize the game. Assists to Kyle Okposo and Brock Nelson.

Jenner has a pass through the goal mouth go wide at 4:40.

SAVE KORPISALO AT 5:55

This game was even across the board at 8:30, per literally every stat, though Columbus only had 12 shots on goal since the first period.

TOE SAVE AND A BEAUTY AT 12:15 BY KORPISALO

SAVE, SOMEHOW, AT 14:47.

CAM DENIED at 15:15.

The game went to overtime tied 2-2, with Columbus outshot 39-25.

BONUS HOCKEY HIGHLIGHTS

Brandon Saad denied at 2:00 on an odd man rush.

Korpisalo made a bunch of saves because he is good.

HOW IS KORPISALO DOING THIS

Seriously, just rinse and repeat “KORPISALO WITH A HUGE SAVE”
