Highlight Recap: Flyers at Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers came together for their first meeting of the season.

Here’s how it went down.

1st Period

A fast and brisk start to the opening period.

Seth Jones and the Jackets started the scoring first, and it was the suddenly scorching power play striking again. Jones is now on a four-game point streak, and the Jackets have a power-play goal in four consecutive games. Jones’ shot hit Ivan Provorov and changed directions on Brian Elliott. Artemi Panarin and Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up points on the play.

Columbus 9

Scoring:
Seth Jones PPG
Artemi Panarin A
Oliver Bjorkstrand A

2nd Period

Philadelphia tied the game at 3:56 when Ivan Provorov shot from the blue line and the slapper beat Sergei Bobrovsky.

The rest of this period was basically Bobrovksy’s.

Whether it was the lead outlet pass to Claude Giroux from Sean Couturier, or several other breaks and chances, Bobrovsky was there for the stop. The Flyers had a golden opportunity, a tic tac toe chance right on Bobrovsky’s doorstep, but his right pad stuck by the right post, stymying Wayne Simmonds.

Let’s head to the third.

Shots:
11-11

Scoring:
Ivan Provorov G
Sean Couturier A
Claude Giroux A

3rd Period

Columbus was outshooting Philadelphia 12-2 inside the first eight minutes of the third. With 15 seconds left, Couturier very nearly could have ended things, walking in on Bobrovsky, but was rejected by the inside of the posts.

Nationwide Arena let out a collective sigh, and with that, it was time for overtime.

Columbus 15
Philadelphia 6

Scoring:
None

Overtime

Nick Foligno had a pick at the Jackets’ blue line, leading the rush the other way, but could not complete the pass for Atkinson. Panarin also had a nice move, deking his way around the defense.

Bobrovsky and Elliott stood tall, as was the case all night, and we settled this in the shootout.

Philadelphia 4
Columbus 1

Scoring:
None

Shootout

The Jackets are 3-2 in the shootout, while the Flyers are winless at 0-2. With the first wave of shooters missing for both, it was Pierre-Luc Dubois going top-shelf for Columbus to grab the shootout lead.

And as apropos as it would be, Bobrovsky made the final save on Jakub Voracek to seal the victory.

Bask in Bob.
