Game Recap: Jackets beat Predators in OT

For the second time in as many games, the Columbus Blue Jackets earned a preseason win in extra time. Instead of a shootout goal, however, Brandon Dubinsky ended this one during 3 on 3. In the comments recently we’ve talked about zone exits, and this goal was a perfect example of a good one. Rookie Zach Werensky cleanly passed the puck out of the defensive zone to Cam Atkinson, who then dished it to a streaking Dubinsky. Note that even if the goalie had deflected it, Atkinson and Werenski were both in great position to collect a rebound.

The other goals were scored by Monsters captain Ryan Craig and Paul Bittner. It’s great to see Bittner get on the scoresheet. Hopefully his injury concerns are in the past and he can have a productive season in Cleveland.

Because the Predators did not ice their best lineup, I don’t want to read too much into  the Jackets’ production tonight. Instead, at this point halfway through the preseason I like to look at who is playing and how they’re being used. More charts from the game like this one can be found at hockeyviz.com

Some observations:

  • Joonas Korpisalo had a clean sheet before getting pulled halfway through for Curtis McElhinney. Good to see him have that result.
  • Jack Johnson and Zach Werenski were paired up for what I call the Maize and Blue Line. Werenski led all Columbus skaters in ice time, and saw time on both the PP and PK. Notice that he was on the ice for all 3 Jackets goals tonight. He is clearly making a huge impact when he’s on the ice.
  • I like the look of that first power play unit, with four forwards and Werenski on the point.
  • Another good audition for Markus Nutivaara. Will he sneak his way onto the roster?
  • Dubois is another prospect who is getting an extended look. I think he looks very comfortable out there. Getting to play with established veterans as linemates helps./

Any observations from those of you who were in attendance?
