Game Recap: Jackets fall to Canes in OT, 2-1

Carolina entered this game on a franchise-record 12 game point streak (8-0-4) while Columbus was trying to keep pace in the President’s Trophy race.

In an attempt to recharge the offense, Torts returned to the “streak lines,” that is the four lines used during the 16 game win streak. Markus Nutivaara returned to the lineup, finally (and played well) and Joonas Korpisalo was in goal.

The game started well, with all 4 lines driving possession and keeping the puck in the Carolina zone. The game tilted the other way in the latter half of the period thanks to a couple penalties.

The second period continued to be a back-and-forth physical game until the “fourth” line finally broke the scoreless tie. On a breakout, Scott Hartnell carried the puck into the offensive zone and waited for his teammates to catch up. He passed cross ice to Jack Johnson, streaking down the far wall. With Lukas Sedlak charging towards the net,  Johnson beat Cam Ward high glove side.

Into the third period, both teams pushed but neither was able to convert on scoring chances. Until under the 5:00 mark, when Jeff Skinner fired a shot that deflected off the skate of Seth Jones into the goal.

The game went to overtime, so the Canes’ point streak would continue. With 2:16 remaining in extra time, Noah Hanifin – aka “not Zach Werenski” – collected a rebound in the slot and fired it past Korpi for the win.

Good news:

Korpisalo had 29 saves

Defensively sound game

The chemistry of all 4 lines was apparent, and all got consistent pressure

Bad news:

Still nowhere near enough scoring chances created. Only 27 scoring chances for, while allowing 36. (per Natural Stat Trick)
