Game #69 Preview: Duel of Sputtering Metro Contenders

Monday, March 11, 2019 – 7:00 EST
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, New York
TV: Fox Sports Ohio; Radio: 97.1 FM
Opponent’s Blog: Lighthouse Hockey

Columbus Blue Jackets (38-27-3, 79 points, 5th Metro, 8th East)

at

New York Islanders (39-22-7, 85 points, 2nd Metro, 5th East)

The Blue Jackets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday to avoid the season sweep. Can they figure out the New York Islanders, who have defeated them twice already? They’re going to have to if they want to keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Player to Watch

Artemi Panarin

The Breadman is pointless in two games against the Islanders this season, with just one shot on goal in each. He has no goals in the last five games, with just two assists in that span (both against Winnipeg). Tonight would be a good time for him to snap that cold streak. Especially if he wants to make a good showing against one of the likely bidder for his  services this summer.

Jackets Notes

The Jackets finally beat the Pens! That was fun … Cam Atkinson scored twice on Saturday, bringing him to 38 goals on the season. That ties Rick Nash for the third highest season total in franchise history (Nash also holds first and second place. For now.) … The third episode of The Cannon Cast is available, and you can now listen on iTunes as well!

The Other Bench

The Islanders’ goals against average – which seemed a bit, erm, unsustainable – has taken a hit with an injury to 1A goaltender Robin Lehner. He suffered a concussion late in regulation in a shootout win vs. Ottawa on Tuesday … Johnny Boychuk did not practice yesterday after taking a headshot from Jakub Voracek on Saturday. Voracek was suspended for two games … The Islanders are back at their old arena for the rest of the regular season, but have lost 4 of their last 6 games there since returning from their Western Canada road trip .
