Whether it be from goaltending or bad bounces, sometimes good play isn’t rewarded. Established elite talent can also play a role in changing outcomes in games and that was exactly what happened against the Leafs. Matthews and Nylander combined for three goals and six points in a 4-1 victory over the Jackets as the home team struggled to convert chances.
The lone Blue Jackets goal was credited to Danforth. Fantilli pushed a free puck to Gaudreau in the defensive zone and Johnny found Danforth for a breakaway goal.
The Maple Leafs were able to convert two power plays, while the Blue Jackets went zero for four. In all situations, the Blue Jackets won the expected goals battle 3.79-2.66. The Jackets have played good 5v5 hockey as of late, but the combined special teams effort is costing them games.
Peeke was benched in the third period and only played 9:21. I think it’s pretty obvious that the GM is pulling ranking when it comes to that lineup decision.
Kuraly was involved in a scary incident in the first period. He went into the boards with two Maple Leafs, took a hard hit, and came out looking off-balance. He was able to make it off the ice, but was in obvious pain and was holding his chest or abdomen. He made it halfway down the tunnel before appearing to collapse. Paramedics responded, but we later found out it was precautionary. The injury is not believed to be serious, but Kuraly was taken to Grant Medical Center for evaluation. Best wishes to him and his family – that’s extra scary only two days before Christmas.
