at

Columbus Blue Jackets (12-12-3, 27 points, 8th Metro, 12th East)

After a 2-3-0 road trip, the Blue Jackets are back in the warm embrace of the Fifth Line, where they a healthy 8-3-1 on the season. On the other side, our old friend John Tortorella and the Philadelphia Flyers, who are once again playing very Torts-esque hockey.

Player to Watch

Matvei Michkov

In the leadup to last summer’s draft, there were some who believed that Michkov was a better prospect than Connor Bedard (and Adam Fantilli). The problem? A multi-year contract in the KHL that would delay his arrival in North America. That uncertainty caused him to fall to #7 where the Flyers were all too happy to take such a talent, and were willing to be patient. Their gamble paid off, as Michkov got out of his contract early and signed with the Flyers this off-season. He has been as advertised with 11/14/25 in 26 games so far. He is second on the team in each of those marks, behind Travis Konecny.

Jackets Notes

Monday was a much-deserved off day, so there was no update on the players fighting injury. Yegor Chinakhov missed the entire road trip with an upper body injury. Cole Sillinger left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury after blocking a shot. Ivan Provorov injured his thumb on Friday in Vancouver, but was able to handle his regular workload on Sunday … The penalty kill has allowed a goal in 13 consecutive games.

The Other Bench

It’s been a streaky year for the Flyers. They’ve had one 6 game losing streak, but also two 5 game point streaks. They’ve currently lost three in a row, including a 2-4 loss at home to Utah on Sunday … In vintage Torts fashion, the Flyers have gone past regulation in 11 of 28 games. They’re 4-2 in overtime and 3-2 in shootouts.
