Game #24 QuickCap: Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings

Instant takes and analysis from the season finale with Detroit.

The Columbus Blue Jackets traveled north to take on the Detroit Red Wings, seeking to get back to their winning ways in Little Caesar’s Arena. The Blue Jackets had split the first two meetings with the Wings, each winning on the other’s home ice.

First Period

Well, Columbus certainly started fast. Goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois off a beautiful feed from Panarin, Josh Anderson off a turnover, and (after much debate) a power play goal from Artemi Panarin meant that the Jackets took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Sergei Bobrovsky played well, keeping the Wings off the board as the Jackets were able to jump to a commanding lead early.

Second Period

The second period started with Detroit replacing Jimmy Howard with Jonathan Bernier. Sergei Bobrovsky left the net to play the puck but was involved in a tangle behind the net. As he got back in front of the net, a tip from Gustav Nyquist sailed perfectly over a crouched Bobrovsky and fell neatly into the net.

It only took five minutes for Columbus to restore their three goal lead as Markus Nutivaara buried a one timer behind Bernier following a turnover forced by Lukas Sedlak.

Shortly after, Boone Jenner scored a fifth for the Blue Jackets, but Mike Greene scored off a bad turnover to make it 5-2 at the 8:40 mark of the second period. Late in the period, Dennis Cholowski made it 5-3 as Detroit ended their power play drought.

Third Period

Detroit was able to draw within one on a goal from Anthony Mantha on the rush with the assist from Dylan Larkin. Pierre-Luc Dubois restored the two goal lead on a scrum that was challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal stood.

With just under three minutes to go, Anthony Mantha cut it to 6-5, but a Seth Jones empty netter iced the game to make it 7-5.
