Falcons Weekly Recap: Week 3

Week 3 of the Springfield Falcons season was not a success on the ice. It was a very busy week all the way around. In case you missed any of it, here we go…

The week started with the arrival of Matt Calvert from Columbus and later in the day, the promotion of Cody Bass to the Blue Jackets. I’m a big Matt Calvert guy, so the selfish side of me is glad to see him back in Springfield. The bigger picture for him though is the reality that he will now have the ability to get some quality ice time and get his game back on track. Cody Bass, in his brief time as a Falcon showed plenty of leadership in addition to an unexpected scoring touch.

Tuesday brought two more signings. First, coming to the Falcons on a PTO is Ray Macias. Ray spent the past three seasons primarily with the Lake Erie Monsters (173 games total). He has also played 8 NHL contests as a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

Also on Tuesday, Ryan Garlock signed a standard AHL contract, after starting the season on a PTO with Springfield.

Stats and more, after the jump…

Thursday was odd, as the Falcons inked veteran netminder Manny Legace to a PTO. This, undoubtedly, was related to the injury to Curtis Sanford in Columbus. The Springfield goalkeeper carousel spun a bit more than usual and when it came to a stop, Allen York was promoted to Columbus, Danny Taylor solved some immigration problems and Paul Dainton may be investigating travel to Chicago.

Unfortunately, the worst part of the week was exactly where the Falcons didn’t want it to be, namely, on the ice.

Springfield played three games, losing all three. First, Friday night a return engagement against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with the Pens blanking the Falcons 3-0. Saturday night the Connecticut Whale came to town and on a fluke goal, late in the third period, managed to eke out a 2-1 victory. The third game of the weekend was Sunday afternoon in Hartford. The Falcons looked exasperated for most of the day, and after falling behind 4-0, managed to score one goal in the final period to end at 4-1.
