Falcons Game 17: Wrapping Up a Perfect Week

The Springfield Falcons closed out a perfect 3-0 week with a 4-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday night in Bridgeport, CT. Also, the three wins put the Falcons into a first place tie in the Northeast Division of the AHL.

The rematch from last Saturday night in Springfield, which the Sound Tigers won by a 4-3 score, was a physically punishing, tight checking affair for most of the night.

Ryan Russell provided plenty of offense for the Falcons in the first period. Russ notched his seventh and eighth goals of the season in the opening stanza.

Brett Lebda and Cody Goloubef assisted on the first Russell goal, while Adam Mair assisted on the second. The Falcons held a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The play was chippy, as expected, with Teddy Ruth getting into a scrap with Brett Gallant just a minute and a half into the game.

At 8:02, Benn Olson cheap shotted Dane Byers. Byers didn’t retaliate, instead letting Olson take a double minor for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct.

The second period had a similar feel to Friday night in Providence, when the Falcons afforded the home team the opportunity to get back into the game.

The Sound Tigers did just that, when Tim Wallace scored his fifth goal at 4:17 of the second period.

The Falcons were kept off the scoresheet in the period, and skated off leading 2-1 after 2 periods of play.

In a heavyweight bout, Tim Spencer squared off with Brett Gallant midway through the second.

Play settled down in the final period, with just four minor penalties called by referee Ryan Fraser.

Cam Atkinson scored his 8th goal of the season at 13:21 on an assist from Martin St. Pierre. The assist extends St. Pierre’s point scoring streak to ten straight games.

The scoring drew to a close when Alexandre Giroux hit the empty net on assists from St. Pierre and Nick Holden to give the Birds the 4-1 win.

The Falcons return to action next Friday night when they conclude their road trip in Glens Falls, NY when they meet the Adirondack Phantoms.
