Dexshow’s Over: Dekanich To Have Ankle Surgery

The long struggles back from injury for Mark Dekanich this season have ended – and with it, potentially his time in Columbus.

If the old adage that nobody releases good news at 5pm on Friday is true, then 10pm is truly catastrophic, as that’s when Aaron Portzline reported that the former AHL all star, signed to a 1 year deal as a potential successor to Steve Mason, will have season ending ankle surgery. The ankle was inured when he was run in the crease during the team’s first exhibition game against Winnipeg, but appeared to be recovering when the netminder injured his groin during warmups for his first rehab start.

After recovering from that injury, the Dexshow gave up four goals on nine shots in Springfield and was pulled after re-injuring the ankle, and that has lead us to this evening.

It’s a frustrating turn of events for Dekanich, who must now hope he can earn a new deal, either in Columbus or with another organization. Perhaps he’ll be given a chance to redeem himself in the Columbus system, but for now it appears that Scott Howson’s decision to gamble on the young netminder this offseason has truly blown up in his face.
