Blue Jackets Trade Nick Moutrey, Fourth-Round Pick for Ian Cole

The Columbus Blue Jackets have reportedly made their first deal of the 2018 NHL Trade Deadline, acquiring defenseman Ian Cole from Ottawa in exchange for forward Nick Moutrey and a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Cole was sent from Pittsburgh to Ottawa in that ménage à trade with Las Vegas on Friday. The 28-year-old has three goals and 10 assists with 47 games for the Penguins this season, and is on the final year of a $2.1 million dollar deal.

Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen drafted Cole in 2007, and according to Aaron Portzline, this move “makes it more likely” the Jackets will move defenseman Jack Johnson today.

Nick Moutrey has three goals and three assists in 22 games with the Cleveland Monsters this season. He was drafted in the fourth round by Columbus in 2013.

So the first domino falls today. Thoughts?
