  • To kick things off, Cam Atkinson and his fiancee are doing something very cool in lieu of wedding gifts:/

  • The three junior leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League are seeing their finals played out, and the Jackets are represented out West and in the Q. Keegan Kolesar and the Seattle Thunderbirds are currently up 1-0 in their series against the Regina Pats, while Pierre-Luc Dubois and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada are down 1-0 to the Saint John Sea Dogs. Kolesar missed the first game due to suspension, however. /
  • Seeds gave us some thoughts on the Vladdy Gavvy (huh?) situation, but it seems like Gavrikov coming over to North America this summer is becoming more unlikely, according to Aaron Portzline:/

I’ve seen some banter about Gavrikov holding off on coming over until after the Olympics, and I have to say, given the Russian’s love of playing for their country at the highest level, I can totally see this as the reason he’s holding off. You stink, Gary.

  • The World Hockey Championship is underway, and PD gave you a quick primer on the tournament. This morning prospect Elvis Merzlikins dropped a clean sheet on Denmark and celebrated in a big way:/

NHL News

  • The Vegas Golden Knights made another signing, inking KHL star Vadim Shipachyov to a two-year deal worth $4.5 million per season. Shipachyov, a center, was highly coveted by a few teams, notably Montreal, and it seems like a bit of a coup for the Knights to get the jump on Marc Bergevin. If Shipachyov can be the next Panarin, the Knights may have their first fan favorite, even before the expansion draft or summer free agency. /

When this signing was announced, my mind immediately went to thoughts of the Knights being the club that acquires Ilya Kovalchuk. Wouldn’t that be wild?

  • Some great news – Sidney Crosby passed his baseline test and will be a game-time decision for Game 5.
  • After trading for him last week, the Carolina Hurricanes signed Scott Darling to a four-year contract. It’s always a bit of a gamble to sign a backup as a starter, but if Darling can do for the ‘Canes what Cam Talbot is doing for the Oilers, it’ll be a great fit. What does this mean for Cam Ward? The Score has some ideas. /

OTHER COOL STUFF

I was recently given the opportunity to review some products that are of interest to hockey fans.

  • Playmobil has a terrific line of NHL-themed figures, and the Blue Jackets are one of the 18 teams that are represented. For adult fans of the Jackets, these are a cool way to show off your fandom by placing a figure on your desk at work, or as a part of a man-cave or fan shrine. /

If you’ve got kids, the figures make for a fun activity given the interactive nature of the skater figure – there’s a spring-loaded “shooter” component which will fire the included puck. The figures also come with a sticker sheet so the figure can be customized with your favorite player’s number. My daughter was excited to open the packages and with a few seconds of setup we were playing desktop puck:

Naturally she placed #72 on the goaltender and #8 on the skater!

  • With an obvious tie-in to hockey playoff beards, I was given the opportunity to review some beard products by a company called Cremo. They also offered some tips to manage a playoff beard:/

·         Wash, Rinse, Repeat: Start a daily beard care regimen with a gentle beard wash to clean and exfoliate hair at every stage without stripping away any moisture.

·         You Are What You Eat: Fuel up on protein and healthy fats from lean meats, nuts and leafy greens to improve the appearance of facial hair as it continues to grow out.

·         Ditch the Itch: The first stages of facial hair growth can be less than pleasant. Ditch the itch by using beard oil or a beard and scruff product, such as Cremo Beard & Scruff Softener, to help soothe the skin and eliminate dryness.

·         Tame the Grizzly Beast: As your facial hair transitions from scruff to a fuller look, moisturize, condition and shape it with a beard balm to tame even the grizzliest beard. Keep using beard oil and softeners, and don’t forget to wash!

·         Commitment: When the play-offs are over and you just can’t let go of your new look, commit to regular beard maintenance by investing in a quality trimmer to trim facial hair every few weeks and continue to keep up with your beard-care routine.

I didn’t have a chance to use the shaving cream yet, but I did try the other products on my own beard. I’ve been using the beard and face wash in the shower, replacing my current face wash. It has a nice scent and legit leaves my face smooth.

I gave the beard balm a quick whirl, as I keep my beard trimmed quite short there wasn’t much to style, but it did smooth out some of the more unruly beard hairs.

I’ve been alternating each day between the beard and scruff cream and the beard oils as the last thing I do before leaving for the office. The beard cream has a nice scent, and keeps things feeling smooth. The unscented and tea tree oils are great, but I found the forest blend scent a bit harsh.
