Blue Jackets grab a point against Bruins, lose in OT

Columbus loses 2-1 in OT in Boston

The first place team against the last place team. We already knew how this one would go. Right?! Obviously, they would play a tight 1-1 game that would have to go to OT to decide a winner.

Here's how it went down.

1st Period

The Blue Jackets went a man down early when Jenner slashed a Bruin to prevent an odd-man rush goal. The good guys were able to kill it off without allowing a shot against.

Shortly after the penalty expired, the Jackets got the man advantage going the other way when Kuraly got tripped up. The first power play unit was quarterbacked by /checks notes/ Gavin Bayreuther.

Important note: The puck trail on the Bally Sports broadcast remains terrible. Please, make it stop.

Another penalty was called with three seconds left on the Columbus power play when Pederson committed a high-sticking infraction. The Jackets killed off the penalty, but also managed to score just as the penalty expired. Foudy made a nice pass across the ice and Roslovic was able to barely get a stick on the puck on the far side to make it 1-0.

For the fourth time in the first half of the first period, a team went down a man. This time it was Marchand for slashing. He looked genuinely surprised that a penalty was called against him. Also for the fourth time, a penalty was killed off.

Befitting of the period, the Bruins went to the box for too many men with one minute left. No damage was done, but the Jackets got to start the second period on the power play.

2nd Period

Boston killed off the remaining portion of the Columbus power play to start the period.

The parade to the box continued for the Bruins as Bertuzzi went off for high-sticking. Were they trying to lose this game? Lucky for them, the Blue Jackets were unable to capitalize.

Sweezey and Lauko dropped the gloves after a faceoff. It was a heavyweight fight in which both players got in some big hits. It ended in a draw.

Pederson, for some reason, decided to crosscheck Bergeron in the side of the head near the halfway point. He originally received a major, but it was downgraded to a minor after review. Personally, I would like the NHL to consistently call these a major. There was no intent, but headshots should be taken more seriously in a league that has lacked any seriousness in regards to concussions.

Bertuzzi put home a redirect from a Zacha pass to tie up the game.

Pederson and Frederic dropped the gloves, but this was less of a fight than the last one. Pederson received one punch and found himself on his rear.

Marchenko high-sticked Marchand going through the neutral zone and received a double minor for his efforts. Not long into the power play, a puck got past Hutchinson, but an early whistle saved the Jackets from a goal against. To be honest, Hutchinson never had the puck fully covered and it should have been a goal if not for the premature stoppage of play.

The Jackets somehow managed to kill off all four minutes.

The game was surprisingly even through two periods. The three-fourths AHL team was limiting the Cup favorite's chances and keeping them from gaining too much momentum at even strength.

3rd Period

Gaudreau was denied on a clear breakaway to start the period.

Roslovic hit the wall very hard when trying make it to the net in time to tip a puck home. It was a scary moment as the side of his head was the secondary contact point against the wall. He looked dazed on the bench and quickly made his way to the locker room.

Jenner and Carlo then dropped the gloves for the third fight of the night. This one was more of a wrestling match, but it was Jenner that managed to get in more hits.

The Bruins went to the box for the fifth time late in the period. The Jackets weren't able to get much going and the game remained tied with less than five minutes left.

Lots of chasing loose pucks in the last few minutes. Were the Bruins even trying?

OT

Pastrnak ended the game 41 seconds in by just walking past Hutchinson and putting the puck into the net.

BOS Goal 2-1: Pastrnak (Lindholm, Nosek) 0:41

Final Thoughts

Boston fans should be sweating after this one. The Bruins played sloppy, uninspired hockey tonight and went to OT against a mostly AHL team. They have seven games left before a playoff run and, after losing to the Preds earlier in the week, don't look like they are trying to finish strong.

Hats off to the Blue Jackets for playing a tight game tonight, but I'm hesitant to heap on too much praise. The Bruins were obviously coasting. Hutchinson, however, does deserve praise for playing a solid game in net.
