Blue Jackets get thumped in Detroit
The Red Wings win this one 5-1
A young lineup headed to Detroit to take on the Red Wings in the team’s fourth preseason game. What was supposed to be a game where guys like Roslovic and Texier could prove themselves, turned into a game we’d rather forget. Let’s take a look at what happened.
The Detroit Red Wings dominated the game early and the Blue Jackets found themselves chasing the puck and being pinned in their own zone. The Red Wings struck early when Taro Hirose deflected the puck in front of the net. Jack Roslovic was there, but ended up screening Elvis and allowing the Detroit player to linger in front of the net.
The rest of the period was about same for Columbus. They struggled to maintain puck possession and didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the offensive zone. The Red Wings would strike again on a weird one. Chase Pearson fired a shot off the rush and Jake Bean was there to block it. Jake Bean landed on the puck and rode it into the net for a Detroit goal. This one may have gotten reviewed in the regular season as it looked like Pearson may have nudged Bean into the net, but that’s a preseason goal. 2-0 Red Wings.
The Jackets came out in the second period with more energy, but still struggled to generate chances. They recorded only three even strength shots in the entire period. The Red Wings managed to pot another goal on the powerplay courtesy of Larkin. This one was hard to watch at times.
Two periods in the books in Detroit and the Jackets are down 3-0. Wings have the shots on goal edge, 16-12. It feels very much like a preseason game. #CBJ— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) October 3, 2021
The Blue Jackets finally got on the board when Cassels won a faceoff back to Harrington, who took a shot from the point. Meyer gathered the rebound and backhanded the puck into the net to make it 3-1. The Red Wings, however, would go on to score two more powerplay goals in win the game 5-1.

At least the Blue Jackets won something in this game. They won the practice shootout 1-0 on a goal by Foudy.
This was a pretty disappointing game from a Columbus standpoint. The players expected to make the NHL squad didn’t show much and the only goal came from an AHL line. Roslovic wasn’t great defensively and didn’t stand out when given the 1C opportunity. Hofmann led forwards and Bean led defensemen with four shots each.
If any player stood out in a good way, it was Peeke. He was more physical and boasted a CF% of 67. This was a decent game for a guy trying to lock down a top six spot in the NHL. Also, hats off to Meyer for scoring in this game. It’s been a tough camp for him and hopefully this gives him a kickstart for the season.
Columbus area native Carson Meyer had his parents and girlfriend here in Detroit as he scored a goal in a #CBJ sweater. Said it’s an exciting moment but dulled by the team result.— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) October 3, 2021
Only four preseason games remain as the Blue Jackets will take on the Sabres Monday night at 7pm in Buffalo.
