2018-19 Season

Daniil Tarasov spent most of the 2018-19 season playing for Toros Neftekamsk of the VHL. While there he had a GAA of 1.71 and a .928 save percentage over 25 games. Tarasov fared even better during Neftekamsk’s impressive 17 game playoff run procuring a 1.87 GAA and .930 sav%.

At the end of the season, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed Tarasov to a three-year entry-level contract.

Former Jackets goaltending coach, Ian Clark, had this to say about Tarasov when he was drafted.

“You take his size and add to it his athletic ability, and his instinctive ability. You want good technique to handle the typical saves that you face, but then every game there’s a handful of situations which require creative solutions in the moment. That’s the goalie’s instinctive ability to play the game ,and that is what this guy has.”

It appears Tarasov is still bringing the same style of play to the game. Here’s what Chris Clark had to say about Tarasov at Development Camp this year.

He’s different than the goalies we have in our system, where they’re a little more reactionary. He’s very meticulous about his movements, and it’s not a lot of wasted space. It looks like he’s thinking the game the whole way.”

You can read the article by Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch here.

2019-20 Forecast

Tarasov will stay overseas in Finland playing for Assat for the 2019-20 season. Which is good because there isn’t much room in the goalie pool for Tarasov to swim. Knowing there are an abundance of netminders in the organization, Tarasov will have to be a superstar to make it to the NHL in the next few seasons. One misstep during the 2019-20 season could lose him a spot even at the the AHL level.

Consistent growth is a big key for Tarasov this season.
