CBJ Prospect Update

After this most recent draft, the Jackets are among the league’s better-stocked clubs when it comes to the future. There is balance at every position, though many of the team’s top blueliners are graduated now. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Jackets take a defenseman with their first pick in 2014, but that’s a discussion for another day. Here’s who’s making waves in the CBJ organization:

  • Peter Quenneville, drafted in the seventh round in June, is jumping from college hockey to the WHL. He’ll be suiting up for the Brandon Wheat Kings. Jackets winger Matt Calvert is a former Wheatie.
  • Josh Anderson has signed his entry-level deal with the Jackets. This will be an important year for him, with his London Knights hosting the Memorial Cup.
  • Oscar Dansk is one of the elite goaltenders in the OHL this year. Last season, his first in the OHL, was difficult playing behind a young Erie squad. This year, the team is led by phenom Connor McDavid, euro-draft steal (did anybody actually think he’d report?) Andre Burakovsky and overager Connor Brown. Dansk has things locked up on the back end, and Erie is looking like a team that can challenge for a league title.
  • Kerby Rychel is leading the Windsor Spitfires in scoring, to the tune of 26 points in 15 games. That’s good for 12th in the league.
  • Oliver Bjorkstrand is lighting up the ‘Dub, with 35 points in 18 games. He’s third in the league in scoring, and the Winterhawks are once again the class of the WHL, even without Seth Jones.
  • Dillon Heatherington is off to a nice start for the Broncos out West, and is in the Team Canada conversation for the World Juniiors.
  • First rounder Alexander Wennberg started off quite strong in his first year with Frolunda, but has cooled of late. He has six goals in 19 games. I really look forward to seeing him don the Tre Kroner this holiday season at the World Juniors.
  • Anton Forsberg has been solid in the MODO net, splitting duties in the cage with Linus Ullmark.
  • Marko Dano has struggled in the KHL thus far. His Euro status means that he can play in the AHL, where the Jackets can keep a closer eye on him and he can learn the North American game sooner. Another option is the Prince George Cougars of the WHL, who own his rights. Something’s got to give.
