It’s hard to think about hockey in the aftermath of Johnny Gaudreau’s passing, but we can’t think of anything else to do. So, between now and the start of camp we will finish our Top 25 Under 25 countdown. Thanks to the 74 readers who submitted ballots in this year’s ranking of Columbus Blue Jackets players and prospects under the age of 25.

2023-24 Season

There was a pattern in the 2024 draft for the Blue Jackets. Don Waddell prioritized both size and skating in all rounds, and Charlie Elick certainly fits that bill. The big righty put up 27 points in 65 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings last season and added 3 points in 7 games at World Juniors. I don’t believe the Blue Jackets drafted him to be an offensive threat, but a legitimate shutdown defenseman.

Corey Pronman of The Athletic is very high on him and recently said, “He is one of the best skaters in the draft, with a smooth and powerful skating stride. When those feet are combined with his 6-foot-3 frame, his strong compete and a bit of a mean streak, he has the potential to be a legit shutdown defenseman in the NHL.” Could he be a future partner for Denton Mateychuk?

2024-25 Outlook

Elick will return to Brandon to play in the WHL. Though he’s not expected to be an offensive powerhouse, I would expect his offensive numbers to improve over last season.

Waddell has a history of letting guys marinate in lower leagues. For Elick, that will only be a good thing.
