Cannon Blasts : Second Round Shenanigans

Hey, I just met you. This is crazy but the Jackets org is in the second round, baby!

On last week’s episode of The Cannon Cast, we discussed the Columbus Blue Jackets vs Boston Bruins series. As well as, what the Cleveland Monsters needed to do to close things out against the Syracuse Crunch and make it to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

You can listen to episode nine of The Cannon Cast here.

Speaking of the podcast, we are taping episode 10 on Monday, April 29th, 2019 at 7pm. We are carving out time to answer any questions you have about the Blue Jackets or Monsters.

Now, back to the playoffs!!

Just in case you don’t know much about the Bruins, our team previewed the forwards, defense, and goaltenders ahead of the series.

Our site manager picked the brain of Stanley Cup of Chowder to help us learn a bit more about the Bruins. You can read that discussion here.

Things are going pretty well for the Jackets. They pushed Game 1 to overtime where they fell, 3-2. They came back with a vengeance in Game 2 beating the Bruins, 3-2, in DOUBLE OVERTIME. Matt Duchene came up big with a beauty of an OT game winning goal.

The Blue Jackets head home for games 3 and 4. Having home ice is always nice. Especially when you have a cannon which continues to scare the opposition no matter how many times they play in Nationwide. The Boston Herald wrote an article about what home ice advantage means to the Blue Jackets. You can check it out here.

Being in the second round is brand new territory for the Jackets. It’s left people wondering if the success the Blue Jackets are having bad for the National Hockey League? or does it even matter? Ryan Real discusses this here.

If anything this 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs run has show one thing. The Jackets seem to find a way to make magic happen.

To honor this fact, our good friends over at Homage created a “Jackets Find a Way” shirt. Click here to buy. Plus, a portion of the proceeds goes to the John and Christine Tortorella Family Foundation.

Cleveland Monsters

As we said earlier, the Monsters made it into the second round of the playoffs.

They kicked the first two games off in Syracuse taking the Crunch down in both games, 5-3 and 5-1.

Game 3 was not the best showing by the Monsters. They played a bit of a different game than on the road causing them to lose, 2-1. Despite their not so hot showing, the Monsters were able to hold the Crunch to just two goals.

A shutout by Brad Thiessen in Game 4 allowed the Monsters to clinch an appearance in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Check out the second round schedule and fan festivities here.
