Cannon Blasts – January 10, 2016

Quietly, this season has trudged past the halfway mark. The Jackets currently have 34 points through 43 games played. At the halfway point (41 games), the team had 32 points. If you equate that over the full 82 games, 64 points would be a franchise worst. The 2015-2016 team has four points ahead of the 2011-2012 pace, though the squad Todd Richards took over went on a bit of a run at the end of the season.

Obviously, the biggest storyline through one half season of hockey was the Ryan Johansen saga ending in a trade to Nashville. Beyond that, the Jackets have disappointed in nearly every facet possible. The injury bug is starting to creep up again. The team is in the top 5 for man games lost.

So it is a bit of a depressing march the rest of the season. The team has one three-game win streak all season. The most scoreboard watching we’ll probably be doing is to check of Buffalo keeps winning, and perhaps if Joey returns to his All-Star level form.

On to the links:

  • Plenty of current and former Blue Jackets litter this fascinating piece from On The Forecheck, taking a look at which players hurt their teams the most by going to the box. This confirms our thoughts about Scott Hartnell’s penalties.
  • The Blue Jackets draw comparisons to the post-1999 Browns in this piece from Cleveland.com’s Tom Reed, former CBJ beat writer.
  • Winter Park construction at McFerson Park is underway. The team will hold an outdoor practice session there at noon on January 22. More info including public skate times can be found here.
  • A CBJ Prospects update from BS Hockey.
  • A quick look at attendance through 20 home games – the Jackets are now on pace for their worst home attendance in franchise history.
  • You have hopefully read both of Matt’s pieces on the independent short film, OLSKY. Via press release – “Olsky has been named an Official Selection at the St. Paul, Minn., Frozen Film Festival, Feb. 5-7. The short, filmed locally at the Easton Chiller location, is just under 8 minutes long and was made entirely in Columbus, Ohio. It will have its public premier in Minnesota. Tickets will be available on the film festival website.”/

Only 39 more games to the finish line.
