Cannon Blasts – April 6, 2016

Down the stretch they come! The Jackets game tonight looms large for lottery odds. Win, and they cannot finish in 30th place. They won’t even be able to finish in 29th at that point. Lose, and there’s still a chance. It looks like Edmonton has that spot sewn up though, with just a back-to-back against Vancouver remaining. It will be an interesting final few days of the regular season to follow.

Let’s go to the links!

  • The SB Nation NHL page goes over some of the more interesting NHL emails that were unsealed.
  • John Scott earned a recall from the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Rumors out of Detroit – Pavel Datsyuk could be considering a move to the KHL after this season.
  • Steven Stamkos could be out awhile after undergoing surgery for a blood clot. The article notes the varying times of recovery based on how things look on the ultrasound. Scary situation, but sounds like Stamkos will be alright. Could have some potential playoff implications in the East, though, and…has Stamkos played his last game in a Lightning sweater?
  • Speaking of, there’s a very tight race in the East for the final couple of spots while the West has been decided for quite some time. Now it’s just teams battling for seeding position – that first-round matchup in the Central is going to be crazy good for an opening playoff series. Boston is on the verge of collapsing out of the playoffs, but one thing is in their favor – the Red Wings and Flyers square off tonight, meaning one has to lose.
  • Former Blue Jacket Stefan Legein penned this piece on his struggles for The Hockey News. It is an interesting read on things that went on behind the scenes – it should be noted this is obviously a one-sided account and some of Legein’s own teammates dispute why he was sent away from the Syracuse playoff run. Legein admits to being too much of a party guy early on, so it’s understandable why the Jackets ultimately traded him.
  • Hockey’s Future discusses the opportunities the rookies have had this season in Columbus.
  • Matt Souva of Buckeye State Hockey looks at the big picture with Boone Jenner and Nick Foligno.
  • The U.S. Women’s Team defeated Canada in an overtime thriller to win the World Championship.

This very well might be the last regular season edition of the Blasts. Feel free to drop a link in the comments if there is anything we missed. We will be ramping up for the draft and lottery for you all shortly. Stay tuned to see where the CBJ end up for those lottery odds.
