BREAKING: Russian Charter Flight Crashes, KHL’s Lokomotiv on board

Another tragedy has struck the hockey world – the YAK-42 charter flight carrying the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team has crashed shortly after takeoff this morning.

The full team plus coaches and several junior team players were aboard the flight, which was on their way to Minsk for the start of the KHL regular season. Reports vary, but at this time we believe the majority of the passengers and crew have been lost. The Lokomotiv roster included former NHLers Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, and 2002 Blue Jackets draft pick Ivan Tkachenko. Former Red Wings coach Brad MacCrimmond had recently taken the job as the new head coach for Lokomotiv, and was on the flight.

This is tragedy to the point of numbing. I simply cannot process the fact that we have lost so many more members of the hockey family. There’s no sense, no logic, no cause to blame. It’s simply a tragic instant that we could not anticipate.
