Blue Jackets Strike Oil(ers)

After a 3 day break this week where practice was focused heavily on the power play per Coach Tortorella, the Blue Jackets took the ice again on Friday night to face the Edmonton Oilers. It was the first game of a back to back, as the Blue Jackets would again take the ice on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Jackets would welcome Connor McJesus… er, Connor McDavid to town for the first time. The first time these teams met this season, the Oilers drilled the Blue Jackets 5-1 in Edmonton. Jack Johnson missed the game while recovering from his upper body injury, replaced by Cody Goloubef. Joonas Korpisalo started in net for the Blue Jackets.

First period- Setting the tone

From the opening faceoff, the Blue Jackets dictated the pace of the game. On this night, they were handsomely rewarded with two early goals. By the 2:44 mark of the first period, the Jackets had stormed ahead and would never look back. Cam Atkinson opened the scoring on a feed from Brandon Dubinsky just 1:54 into the game. Seconds later, David Savard roofed a shot high glove side.

The Blue Jackets, while they had chances, appeared to ease back and allow the Oilers to control of the rest of the period. The Oilers heavily outshot the Jackets, but the score remained 2-0.

Second period- Quick Responses

The second period started with some news from Twitter- per Jeff Svoboda, CBJ prospect Zach Werenski was down on the ice holding his knee. However, he was able to return to the ice after missing about 5 minutes of game time. Columbus exhales.

The Oilers drew the score to 2-1 on a goal from Leon Draisaitl at 4:35. Ten seconds later, Fedor Tyutin extended the lead back to two goals with his first of the season. After Nail Yakupov tripped Seth Jones, Boone Jenner scored on the ensuing power play to make it a 4-1 game. Seth Jones went off for tripping McDavid, and the Oilers capitalized on the power play to make it 4-2 with 1 minute to go in the period.

With Just 16 seconds left, the Jackets again responded. Alexander Wennberg found Scott Hartnell, and the Jackets went in with a 5-2 lead.

Third period- Finishing strong

Brandon Saad was not on the bench to start the third period following an open ice hit by Matt Hendricks.

Connor McDavid scored early in the third period, because of course he did. McDavid will be special one day. Yet, again, the Blue Jackets responded. David Savard buried his 2nd of the night at 4:26. Even David Clarkson had a point!

At 12:50 as one of the linesmen, Darren Gibbs, was hit was with a clearance from Mark Fayne. He was hit in the back of the leg and went down immediately. He was taken off the ice, putting no weight on his foot. Hopefully he is okay.

FINAL:

Columbus Blue Jackets 6 Edmonton Oilers 3

Reflections

Brandon Saad, it was announced after the game, would not travel to Philadelphia after suffering his injury.

Shoutout to David Savard for his first multipoint night of his career, as well as to Matt Calvert for his 100th career point.

After a long break earlier the Blue Jackets head out on the road to take on the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow night, because of course they do. Faceoff is at 7:00 EST.
