Blackhawks 4, Jackets 1 - Quick Thoughts

The Jackets' horrific start to the season continues, with a 4-1 loss in Chicago.

- The Jackets came out with purpose, playing their heavy style early in the game.

- 4:30 in, Dalton Prout had a turnover behind the Columbus net, which led to an excellent scoring chance for Chicago, but Curtis McElhinney made an equally great kick save:

- Kerby Rychel, who was called up last night, had a strong opening period. The entire fourth line of Rychel, Gregory Campbell and David Clarkson was quite effective.

- The powerplay was disjointed if Brandon Saad wasn't on the ice.

- Ryan Johansen played the first period stuck in first gear.

- Patrick Kane had a one-time blast from a sharp angle, but McElhinney came up with a huge glove save:

- CMac followed that up with a big save on an Artemy Panarin breakaway.

- After a shit line change by the Columbus forwards, the 'Hawks skated into the Jackets' zone 4-on-2, with Artem Anisimov going backhand-goal to put his team up 1-0. Yes, Arty on the backhand. Uggh.

- Right after that, Cody Goloubef was whistled for interference. Teuvo Teravainen banked a cross-crease pass off Prout's skate and behind McElhinney. 2-0 Chicago.

- About six minutes into the third, Prout was given a cross-checking call right after taking a high stick to the face. While Prout was skating to the box, Brandon Dubinsky gave the ref an earful, earning himself an unsportsmanlike call. The 'Hawks scored to go up 3-0 when Marian Hossa picked Matt Calvert's pocket in the neutral zone.

- McElhinney had another beauty save, this time shutting the door on Kane:

- Cam Atkinson had a good chance midway through the period, forcing Crawford to come up with his best save to that point.

- With 3:39 left, the Jackets spoiled Crawford's bid for a shutout when Jack Johnson fired a point shot into the Chicago net:

- With two-plus minutes left in the game, the Jackets pulled McElhinney, and with the cage open Patrick Kane potted the empty-netter.

FINAL SCORE: 4-1 Blackhawks
