2024-25 Player Review: Damon Severson… yeah

Apr 16, 2024; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Damon Severson (78) lifts the stick of Carolina Hurricanes left wing Brady Nadeau (29) to prevent a goal during the third period at Nationwide Arena. Mandatory Credit: Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

What happens when you combine a desperate General Manager, fifty million dollars, a mistake-prone offensive defenseman, and said defenseman having his offensive production dry up? You get Damon Severson.

Contract:

Damon Severson has six years left at $6.25M against the cap… thanks Jarmo. It expires in 2031. For those wondering, a buy out this offseason would cost the Blue Jackets a smidge over $1.5M until 2037, which is admittedly better than expected.

High Point:

On October 30th, Severson scored the game winning goal in a 2-0 victory over the Islanders. The other candidate would be a three-assist performance on December 1st against Chicago.

Low Point:

I mean, not scoring in the last 44 games played ain’t fantastic, especially when being paid $6.25M a year. But more than that was the costly turnovers and blown defensive coverage, which gave away dozens of goals over the course of the season. With the Blue Jackets missing the playoffs by two points (and the 4th overall pick by one regulation loss), any number of those having better defensive coverage could’ve had massive implications on the season. And he’s here until 2031.

Report Card:

D – His defensive metrics were better than expected, and I feel like if he was making like $2Mx2 instead of $6.25×8 we wouldn’t be as harsh. But he is. So we are.
