It was a trying season for the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021 but Cam Atkinson had himself a milestone year, notching career-goal 200 and career-point 400 this season. Overall his 2021 campaign ended with 15 goals (second on team) and 19 assists (fourth) for a 34-point season (tied for second).
Not to shabby I suppose for a 56-game season. The offense could have been better as a whole but for what it’s worth, Cam was among the team-leaders as you can see.
Cam Atkinson 2021 Stats
Games Played: 56
PIM: 4 (Lady Byng Candidate?)
5v5 CF%: 46.5
5v5 FF%: 47.9
Cam has a $5,875,000 cap hit per year through 2024-25 season. He will then be a UFA in his age 36 season in 2025-26. During 2020-24, Atkinson has a 10-team trade list.
New Cannon writer Dale Bloom wrote about Atkinson recently for our ongoing Jackets 20 segment and No. 13 thought highly of it.
On the ice, Cam had a five-game goal streak from from Feb. 8 - 18 notching nine points in the span (five goals, four assists), including a four-point game against the Chicago Blackhawks in which he had one goal, three assists on Feb. 11 in Chicago.
Also in this game, Atkinson’s first period short-handed goal was his 15th career, surpassing Rick Nash for most all-time in a Blue Jackets sweater. He ended the season with four — tying a career high in 2018-19 — and now has 16 for his career.
If you extend it out from Feb. 4 - 27 he had 13 points including eight goals for the month. As mentioned at the top, he earned his 200th career goal (213) and 400th career point (402). He’s currently at 189 career assists so he should earn No. 200 for the category next season.
Cam had a 12-game goalless drought from April 12 - May 7 before nothing his 15th in the season finale against the Detroit Red Wings. While he had nine power play assists on the season, he only had one power play goal.
I think he’s getting a B in my book but let’s see what the fans think.
How would you grade Cam Atkinson’s season?
