Game #10 Recap: Blackhawks pump the brakes on CBJ point streak

Nothing gold can stay.

I wasn’t able to watch the whole game on Friday, but I heard it was a snooze fest - and with five Blackhawks on the COVID protocol absence list, it was unclear whether this rematch would take place. But for better or worse, the show must go on!

1st Period

Philipp Kurashev drew first blood with an early goal in the first period, which until tonight would have suggested fortunate results for the Jackets, who were 2-0-0 in games where they hadn’t scored first this season. No longer!

Boone Jenner made a clean pass to Jack Roslovic, who shot and knocked it off the pads of Kevin Lankinen, and Boone crashed the net for the rebound goal. This was Roslovic’s first point for the Blue Jackets, and the period ended with 11 shots by Columbus to Chicago’s seven.

2nd Period

I could have squeezed in a quick nap after the first period and before the third period and not missed anything. The only thing of note were a series of penalties, but naturally the Jackets were unable to convert on any of these. Fortunately, they were able to manage a 4 vs. 4 and a penalty kill.

3rd Period

Okay, so after a snoozer of a second period, things started going downhill pretty quick. The Jackets developed several good chances on goal, and I really thought Foudy was going to find the back of the net more than once, but they were unable to put any away.

A little under nine minutes into the period, Pius Suter knocked a goal in off Elvis’ pad after he was unable to clear the puck out from behind the net.

So that was painful to watch - but wait, there’s more! To be fair, Kevin Lankinen had a great game with a number of integral saves with the Jackets’ 33 shots, but that doesn’t explain why Elvis Merzlikins struggled so hard tonight.

Elvis owned his mistakes in the post-game presser, but it was still discouraging to watch happen in real time. Patrick Kane rounded out the Blackhawks’ resounding win with a third goal, another sloppy miss on Elvis’ part - the Jackets fell 3-1, effectively ending their seven-game point streak.

The Blue Jackets regroup on Tuesday to take on the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m. at Nationwide Arena.
