2021 Traverse City Prospect Tournament Preview

*Editor’s Note: The new commenting system will go into effect at the same time the Blue Jackets game starts this afternoon. Once the switch happens, we’ll post a new open thread for people to comment on the games and test the new system.*

For many in the hockey world, the Traverse City Prospect Tournament marks the start of each new season. With NHL training camp proceeding the tournament, the long awaited return of hockey is nearly over. This year’s tournament will feature five teams: the Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, and the host team Detroit Red Wings. The Blue Jackets will play four games over the course of five days and highly anticipated prospects Cole Sillinger and Yegor Chinakhov will play their first games in Union Blue.

Schedule

DATE TIME HOME VISITOR
Thursday, September 16 3:00pm Columbus Blue Jackets Toronto Maple Leafs
Friday, September 17 7:00pm Dallas Stars Columbus Blue Jackets
Sunday, September 19 6:00pm Columbus Blue Jackets Detroit Red Wings
Monday, September 20 1:00pm Toronto Maple Leafs Columbus Blue Jackets

All games will be streamed live at nhl.com/bluejackets and nhl.com/redwings.

The Blue Jackets roster features several draft picks from recent years as well as some invites that will look to prove they deserve an entry level contract. Unfortunately, prospects currently playing in the NCAA were unable to attend the tournament this season. That means no Kent Johnson, Guillaume Richard, or Corson Ceulemans.

Roster

FORWARDS DEFENSE GOALIES
39 – Tyler Angle 75 – Tim Berni 31 – Emerik Despatie
56 – Ben Boyd 94 – Ole Julian Bjorgvik-Holm 60 – Jet Greaves
59 – Yegor Chinakhov 32 – Jake Christiansen
21 – Josh Dunne 68 – Cole Clayton
49 – Cole Fonstad 82 – Gerard Keane
63 – Jake Gaudet 81 – Stanislav Svozil
83 – Kaleb Lawrence 88 – Mark Woolley
73 – James Malatesta
55 – Carson Meyer
65 – Tristan Mullin
85 – Navrin Mutter
84 – Peter Reynolds
77 – Martin Rysavy
34 – Cole Sillinger

Among the invites is center Peter Reynolds. The 18 year old went undrafted over the summer, but was ranked as high as 71st overall by Scott Wheeler of The Athletic. Reynolds went 15-16-31 in 33 games last season for Saint John of the QMJHL. Goalie Daniil Tarasov may be able to make the trip to Traverse City, but is not currently on the roster.

Former seventh round pick Tyler Angle impressed in Cleveland last season. He’ll get an opportunity to play with Sillinger and Chinakhov, two players that could end up being his teammates this season for the Monsters. That top line will certainly be one to watch.

Enjoy your first taste of hockey prior to the 2021-2022 season. It’s all downhill from here as the Blue Jackets open up the preseason against the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 27th.
