2021 Player Review: Boone Jenner

“There’s no one on this team that plays harder than him,” former head coach John Tortorella said after the game on Tuesday, April 7 when it became apparent that a broken finger would sideline Boone Jenner for the remainder of the Jackets’ season.

Jenner suffered the season-ending injury after being hit in the hand with a shot by teammate Patrik Laine in a game against Tampa Bay Lightning.

Prior to his injury, Jenner led the team in face-off win percentage (55%) and was averaging 18:00 time on ice per game this past season, which is a significant increase over his 16:36 career average – he was also third on the team in blocked shots.

Jenner’s season wasn’t bad, but he certainly wasn’t a difference-maker in most situations – of course, not one single person would have been capable of putting the CBJ on their back and getting them to the playoffs this year, and Jenner was especially hindered by his broken finger late in the season. Let’s take a look at what he accomplished while healthy:

2021 Stats

Games played: 41
Goals: 8
Assists: 9
Points: 17
Plus/minus: -9
PIM: 13
5v5 CF%: 45.7%
5v5 FF%: 45.7%

High Point

I happened to like this moment against the Red Wings:

I remember thinking that Boone was looking sharp at the beginning of this season in particular! He is nearly always is the toughest guy out on the ice, but he was scoring and assisting in important moments too, which he wasn’t always known to do last season.

Low Point

Probably the season-ending broken finger, right? Real bummer that it was inflicted off a dinger by his own teammate, Laine – but I suppose the silver lining here is that their season wasn’t going anywhere anyways, so Jenner now has plenty of time to rest and recuperate before whatever comes next for him.

Contract Status

Jenner just completed his third of his four-year contract with the Blue Jackets, earning a base salary of $3,500,000 last season. He’ll enter UFA status in the 2022-23 season. I want Jenner to remain with the Blue Jackets for purely sentimental reasons, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go – let’s see what happens in the FO this off-season!
