2020 NHL Draft Open Thread

After a nearly four month delay, the 2020 NHL Entry Draft is finally here!

Round One begins tonight (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. on NBCSN. Rounds Two through Seven will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) beginning at noon. This post will be the open thread for both days, so feel free to chat about the picks as they happen, react to the Columbus picks, and speculate about trades that could happen. It’s quite possible the Jackets could make some moves.

We will have a full post for the first round pick tonight, and another post tomorrow evening recapping the Day Two selections.

UPDATE 2: With the 21st pick, the Blue Jackets selected Yegor Chinakhov, a forward from Russia who was not drafted last year and who was not on most expert’s draft boards this year, but who scored 69 points in his junior league last season and has scored 5 goals in his first 12 games in the KHL this season.

UPDATE 3 (2:38 p.m.): With the 78th pick (acquired in the Anderson/Domi trade), the Blue Jackets selected Samuel Knazko. He’s a Slovakian defenseman who has been playing in the Finnish junior league. 2/3/5 in 9 games so far this season.

UPDATE 4 (4:03 p.m.): With the 114th pick, the Blue Jackets selected Mikael Pyyhtia. He’s a Finnish center and teammate of Knazko.

UPDATE 5 (5:24 p.m.): With the 145th pick, the Blue Jackets selected Ole Julian Bjorgvik-Holm. What a name! He’s a Norwegian defender who played in the OHL last season and is back in Norway now.

UPDATE 6 (6:26 p.m.): With the 176th pick, the Blue Jackets selected Samuel Johannesson. He is yet another European skater, and another defenseman. He spent 44 games last year in the top league in Sweden.

Also, earlier this afternoon Max Domi signed a two year contract with the Jackets, with an annual cap hit of $5.3 million. He will be an unrestricted free agent in summer 2022, like Seth Jones and both goalies.
