Sure, everyone picked Columbus to beat the best team in the NHL twice in two weeks by a score of 8-2, right?

Hockey is the weirdest sport.

Anyway, Columbus is on a five game winning streak and has beaten Washington twice in that span. Why not. Now, the half-Jackets/half-Monsters have taken 14 of their possible last 16 points and have seen Joonas Korpisalo get named a star of the week. Sonny Milano may return soon, but most of the rest of the team is either on IR or nursing some sort of injury.

Can the shorthanded Jackets make it six straight?

Player to Watch

Seth Jones

Jones, with five assists in his last five games, now has 22 points in 37 games played this season. Jones has just one game in the month of December where he has played fewer than 24 minutes and, after a slow start by his standards, has rounded into his Norris Trophy form. The Jackets would be nowhere without their blue line anchor and he is the engine driving every skater on the team right now.

Jackets Notes

Joonas Korpisalo leads all NHL goaltenders in wins since November 15 with 11 wins in that span ... Pierre-Luc Dubois is on a four game point streak (2-4-6) ... Vladislav Gavrikov has two goals in his last two games ... Gustav Nyquist has 2-6-8 in his last eight games ... Cam Atkinson is expected to miss two to three weeks with an ankle sprain

The Other Bench

The Capitals are second in the NHL at 3.53 goals per game ... Alex Ovechkin is fourth in the NHL with 23 goals this season ... The Capitals have the second best penalty kill in the NHL
