NHL FanPulse results: Contenders, Pretenders, and Disappointments

Who has surprised you so far?

NHL: OCT 06 Lightning at Hurricanes

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the SB Nation NHL FanPulse so far. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late! Click here and you’ll get an email next Wednesday with a new set of questions.

In this week’s FanPulse poll, hockey fans were asked about teams who have produced unexpected results. First, some teams with hot starts were labelled as either contenders or pretenders:

I think the Carolina Hurricanes were an obvious choice for “contender” considering their appearance in the Eastern Conference Final last spring. I’m not sold on the other five making deep runs.

On the flip side, the second question asked which team has been the biggest disappointment:

Another obvious choice here, as Father Time appears to be catching up to last year’s Western Conference Finalist. Then there’s the Tampa Bay Lightning; did the Blue Jackets break them?

Here are the full results:

Edmonton Oilers - 56.69% Pretenders, 43.31% Contenders

Buffalo Sabres - 51.64% Pretenders, 48.36% Contenders

New York Islanders - 54.46% Pretenders, 45.54% Contenders

Arizona Coyotes - 71.48% Pretenders, 28.52% Contenders

Carolina Hurricanes - 13.73% Pretenders, 86.27% Contenders

Vancouver Canucks - 74.77% Pretenders, 25.23% Contenders

One month into the season, which team has been the biggest disappointment?

San Jose Sharks - 25.59%

Tampa Bay Lightning - 23.59%

Dallas Stars - 21.13%

New Jersey Devils - 20.42%

New York Rangers - 4.69%

Minnesota Wild - 4.58%

Which teams did you vote for in each question? Which start has most surprised you? Vote on that one in the poll below:
