St. Louis Blues (12-3-4, 28 pts, 1st Central, 1st West)

vs.

Columbus Blue Jackets (6-8-4, 16 pts, 7th Metro, 13th East)

Last year is old news but I suppose it’s just polite to mention that the most recent Stanley Cup champs are coming to Columbus. Does last year matter? Let’s just focus on the now. Right now, the Blues are coming off a loss to Arizona. We will ignore the 7 game win streak they had immediately prior. Right now, they haven’t scored on their last two power plays. We will ignore that they have the #3 PP in the league. Right now, they don’t have Vladimir Tarasenko. We will ignore that they have the best record in the West. I think Columbus has ‘em right where they want ‘em.

We do have to talk about the home team, though. It would be more fun to focus on last year but…we are adults. We must face facts. Columbus has not had particularly good results lately. An argument could be made that they have played better. I will not be making that argument today. However, I will point out that Elvis Merzlikins had a pretty decent start against Montreal – though there’s no guarantee he plays tonight. The defense isn’t as bad as we think, according to the metrics! Eye test doesn’t always corroborate. I kinda want to call a win here… I’ll just say this: If Sonny Milano plays more than 11 minutes, the CBJ will win this game.

Player to Watch

Cam Atkinson

18 games. 10 points. 3 goals (still). None on 5v5 (still).

We did this almost two weeks ago against Calgary. It did nothing! A few secondary assists. Perhaps we did it wrong. Perhaps the weight of fan expectation – or the feeling of daggers being stared at him -- does not move him. What does he want? A Care Bear Stare!? One has to earn those. Score, Atkinson. Score. (5v5, though).

Jackets Notes

Zach Werenski sets a record every time he scores a goal…Kole Sherwood was placed on IR after tearing an oblique muscle…Markus Hannikainen has been recalled…Columbus has a -19 goal differential…Movember is in full swing, how do you ‘stache?

The Other Bench

St. Louis called up Klim Kostin – the 31st pick of the 2017 draft…Jordan Binnington has a Curtis Joseph inspired mask…this is awesome…He won’t be wearing it against Columbus…Not awesome
