NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets at Philadelphia Flyers Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

I’m still not ready to talk about that disastrous third period from Saturday. So instead enjoy this picture of Pierre-Luc Dubois and the rookie forwards from the team’s Halloween party:

The week that was

Game 9: CBJ 4 TOR 3 (OT)
Game 10: CBJ 4 CAR 3 (OT)
Game 11: PHI 7 CBJ 4

Prior to the Flyers game, I recorded a preview podcast with Broad Street Hockey.

MrSwift took aim at assistant coach Brad Larsen for the consistently poor power play performance over the last three seasons. There have been other takes at 1st Ohio Battery and The Athletic which place more aim at the players. Is it true the players aren’t executing? Of course. I wouldn’t say this is entirely Larsen’s fault. He’s not teaching them to stand around and not shoot. HOWEVA, they’ve been doing the same bad things for so long, and he’s the one in charge of fixing it. If he’s not able to do that, then what exactly is he doing here?

Aaron Portzline at The Athletic documented the extent of Brandon Dubinsky’s wrist injury and the work he is doing to recover. He sounds committed to returning to the NHL but it sounds like there’s a lot of damage there and a lot of pain that comes with it.

Kyle Cantion at Yahoo Sports Canada salutes Torts for his anti-shootout stance. I concur! Shootouts are bad and 3v3 sudden death OT is fun as hell.

William Chase wrote a very nice piece taking a positive view on the team challenging the low expectation most outsiders had for them. Unfortunately it was mostly written before they laid an egg on Saturday night. This is why I always put off writing my articles until the last minute!

elpalito made his triumphant return to the Cannon Cast, joining Will and Elaine.

Blue Jackets skills coach Kenny McCudden was named to the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame. Congrats, Kenny!

Seth Jones has an artistic admirer:

On Deck

Wednesday: vs. Edmonton
Friday: at St. Louis
Saturday: vs. Calgary

Monsters Mash

Lots of Monsters action since our last CB. They lost on Sunday in a shootout to Toronto. The full three game weekend was recapped in the State of the Monsters address.

This weekend, they scored a sweep over Rockford with seven goals on Friday - featuring seven different goal scorers! - and a Veini Vehvilainen shutout on Saturday.

Around the League

Do you get mad when Torts blends his lines all the time? You’re not the only fanbase with this frustration about your coach. Here is Winging It In Motown complaining about Jeff Blashill.

The defending champs are having an inconsistent start to the season, according to St. Louis Game Time.

Jewels From the Crown explains why fans should enjoy the Kings during a rebuild.

One team that tried to fast forward a rebuild with some major offseason additions has dug themselves a hole so far. I’m talking about the Devils. So is All About the Jersey.

Ohio Sports Update

Another bad football Sunday, with the Bengals remaining winless after a trip to London and the Browns going FULL BROWNS with three first quarter turnovers in a 27-13 loss in New England.

Fortunately there’s one great football team in Ohio, with the Buckeyes earning a decisive victory over Wisconsin, with praise for DE Chase Young and RB JK Dobbins.

The Cleveland Cavaliers won their home opener, but did they really have to revive those terrible late-90s uniforms?

Play me out

A picture our Twitter account took during Monday’s game reminded me of something:

STEVE MOTHERFORKING WINWOOD. His stuff in the 60s with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith was great. His revival as a solo act in the 80s was also great, despite my general aversion to too much synth. He’s so good that he made it WORK. I’ve referenced him in these parts before, back with my first Fanpost in 2014.

Screw that commercial with the old guy listening to that Amy Winehouse song. There’s only one “Valerie” we recognize in this house:
