Captain Nick Foligno just wrapped up his eighth season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, believe it or not – the most permanent fixture on the current team, Fliggy brings so much to the table: his good nature, the right words, and his fearsome moments of comeuppance, when called for.
So how did this last season pan out for him? A few highlights come to mind, as well as a few lowlights. He definitely demonstrated his defensive prowess throughout, even receiving six fifth-place votes for the Selke Trophy, awarded by the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association to a player demonstrating great defense in a season.
In 67 games played in the regular season, with an additional 10 playoff games, Foligno definitely had a busy, rough-handed season. He led the team in penalty minutes with 62, the next closest being Pierre-Luc Dubois with 49. Let’s take a look at the rest of the stats, shall we?

Contract Status
In December 2014, Nick Foligno signed a $33 million 6-year extension contract with the CBJ. This makes his yearly salary $5.5 million with a cap hit of $5.5 million, and he will become a UFA in the 2021-22 season.

It’s gotta be the dirty elbow against Pierre-Edouard Bellemare in the November 9 loss to the Colorado Avalanche for me. Foligno was ejected after review, and suspended for three games by the Department of Player Safety. The hit cost him $88,709.67 – big oof, am I right? Hate when I miss three days of work and miss out on 88 Gs. Ah, hockey players – they’re just like us!
