“Big Boy” is one of the best ways to describe Mattias Samuelsson who currently sits at 6’4”, 216 lbs. He does not use size as his saving grace. In fact, Samuelsson uses his big body to round out his style of play. he knows the proper balance between being physical and over-aggressive.
Samuelsson has great habits and a strong competitive nature thanks to his dad, former NHL standout, Kjell Samuelsson.
Samuelsson is one of multiple players from this year’s draft class to originally commit to the University of Michigan and then de-commit later. He is currently committed to Western Michigan where his brother, Lukas, played last season.

NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) - 21
“Defensively he stands out. He understands the role. He plays within his means. He moves well for his size, he doesn’t over-handle the puck. He does know how to utilize his size asset and he does know how to utilize it within the rule. He doesn’t go out of his way to run guys, hit guys. His 1-on-1 game, he makes sure he handles his checks. On the defensive side of the puck he’s responsible with it.” - Dan Marr - Director of NHL Central Scouting
“There’s lots of room in the game for someone who is adept on the defensive side of the puck, with leadership capabilities , and unearthed offensive upside.” - Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet
“Son of former NHL defenseman, Kjell, Mattias plays the game like his old man; his is a hard hitting and plays a hard game. He may have a better offensive game than his father as he posted nearly a point per game in the USHL.” - Peter Harling - Dobber Prospects
