A future middle six center - could he fill a need for Columbus?

Isac Lundestrom

Place of birth: Gallivare, Sweden
Youth team: Malmbergets AIF
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 185 pounds
Postion: Center, Left wing
Shoots: Left

Isac Lundestrom is a center with upside, though likely not first line potential. Lundestrom put up six goals and nine assists in 42 games played in the Swedish Hockey League this past season. He is solid-if-unspectacular in all areas of his game, and plays competently in all three zones. He likely projects as a middle six center in the NHL.

Scouting Reports

Lundestrom could be a solid two-way forward at the NHL level, capable of playing in all situations and putting up points. While it’s not clear that he has the potential to be a franchise centre, he can be a solid top-six player. Lundestrom needs to work on improving his strength, being better in front of the net without the puck, and shooting more. His defensive game will also grow with more minutes and good coaching. Expect him to spend another year or two in Sweden before coming to the NHL. Lundestrom’s game is reminiscent of Mikko Koivu of the Minnesota Wild, but this is a style comparison only and not one based on talent.

Last Word on Hockey

Lundeström centred Sweden’s top line in the World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, and he did it very well. He has become more defensively aware, and while the opening round of the draft is light on centres, Lundeström is a good option for a team that has need of a player to play in the middle on a second line. While he isn’t the flashiest player, he does the small things right and is the kind of player you like more the more you watch him play.
