2018 Draft Prospect Profile: Ty Dellandrea

The speedy center could end up being the steal of the draft.

Ty Dellandrea

Date of birth: July 21, 2000
Place of birth: Toronto, Ontario
Youth team: Flint Firebirds
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 190 pounds
Position: Center
Shoots: Right

Ty Dellandrea’s biggest asset is his skating. His speed is top notch and he has the ability to pull away from defenders and create space. He also has the ability to score the puck, registering 27 goals and 32 assists for 59 points in 67 games played last season. His size is a concern and he could stand to put on muscle. Dellandrea plays a north-south, direct game and could be the steal of the draft when everything is said and done.

Scouting Reports

The good news is that Dellandrea’s biggest weakness is one that is common in teenage hockey prospects and easily remedied. Adding muscle and strength are often things that are necessary, and come through hard work over the next couple of years. While Dellandrea may not become a franchise centre, he could be a top-six centre with a good defensive game. Dellandrea’s game is reminiscent of Joe Pavelski of the San Jose Sharks. This is a stylistic comparison only though, and not one based on potential or ability

Last Word on Hockey

Dellandrea has top-six upside at the next level with a chance to reach top-line center potential. We’ll likely see him play another season in Flint. But don’t be surprised if he’s competing for full-time NHL duty in 2-3 years

The Hockey Writers

From an offensive perspective, Dellandrea has a very good wrist and snapshot. When he doesn’t have the puck, he has the intelligence to find the holes in attacking zone and put himself in position to create scoring chances - unfortunately, he didn’t have many teammate with the ability to find him often enough. Dellandrea isn’t afraid to fight for the puck down low, and he’s got the hand eye coordination to poke the puck free from scrums - something that comes in handy when going up against much stronger defenders.
