2017 NHL Free Agency Open Thread and Trade Watch

Let’s track and discuss all the rumors and news here

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Columbus Blue Jackets Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Today, July 1, is Canada Day. Sure, they would have you believe it’s a celebration of Canadian independence, but in reality it’s a national holiday so the entire country can follow the opening day of NHL free agency.

Beginning at noon, teams can officially sign free agents. Follow along in the comments as we track the rumors and news over the course of the weekend. If you see a rumor, feel free to post it.

Here are some things to watch today:

  • Will Columbus sign anyone? I would not expect a free agent signing this week. If they add any free agents I would expect it to be later in the summer.
  • Will Columbus ADD anyone? This is more likely, as the Jackets are one of the teams that has made a trade offer to Colorado for Matt Duchene.
  • What will some former Jackets do? Scott Hartnell is now a free agent after getting bought out this week. Sam Gagner will hit the open market. Our old friend Ryan Johansen is an RFA and is said to have asked for $8M a year from Nashville.

Stay tuned to The Cannon for news and commentary about any moves the Blue Jackets make...
