NHL Central Scouting’s #3 ranked European Skater, Andersson is the son of Niklas Andersson, an NHL journeyman who eventually returned home to be a bigger fish in the smaller pond of the SEL.
Lias has had quite a season, locking down a third line spot in his second SHL season and helping HV71 in their championship run, his draft stock rising the entire team thanks to his strong defensive play and quick hands. Most scouts are projecting his ceiling as a second line NHL forward, and it’s quite possible he’s got the talent to make it.
With mock drafts and projections suggesting he could be drafted as high as #10 or as low as the early twenties, there’s a decent chance he could still be available for the Blue Jackets, but you have to wonder if he’s what Jarmo and his scouting team are looking for.
Andersson seems like he could follow a similar development path to fellow Swede William Karlsson, and they share a lot of the same qualities - but most expect Columbus to be looking for someone who will bring more of a scoring threat to the table. Still, depending on the results of the expansion draft (and particularly if the team loses a player like Karlsson or Josh Anderson), he could be exactly what the team needs to restock their pipeline.
